Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Customs Union: A Practical Scheme of Fiscal Union for the Purposes of Defence and Preferential Trade From a Colonist's Standpoint The fiscal union outlined in the following pages is submitted to the public as a simple and practicable plan of strengthening the ties which unite the several parts of the Empire, acceptable to protectionists, yet consistent with free-trade principles. During my long residence in Canada, the most protectionist of Colonies, I became convinced that moderate protection was beneficial to Colonies in the early years of their development, though free trade is unquestionably the most advantageous policy for Great Britain. In formulating this scheme I have avoided, on the one hand, the Scylla of extreme protection, and, on the other hand, the Charybdis of universal free trade. The proposed union begins with free trade throughout the Empire in seven products - flour, wheat, mutton, cheese, tallow, hides and skins - which are important exports of nearly all the self-governing Colonies, and with a duty of either ten per cent. or fifteen per cent. upon the imports thereof from foreign countries. Book Development Trade and the WTO

Download or read book Development Trade and the WTO written by Bernard M. Hoekman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: Developing countries are increasingly confronted with the need to address trade policy related issues in international agreements, most prominently the World Trade Organization (WTO). New WTO negotiations on a broad range of subjects were launched in November 2001. Determining whether and how international trade agreements can support economic development is a major challenge. Stakeholders in developing countries must be informed on the issues and understand how their interests can be pursued through international cooperation. This handbook offers guidance on the design of trade policy reform, surveys key disciplines and the functioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and discusses numerous issues and options that confront developing countries in using international cooperation to improve domestic policy and obtain access to export markets. Many of the issues discussed are also relevant in the context of regional integration agreements. Separate sections of the handbook summarize what constitutes sound trade policy; the major aspects of the WTO from a development perspective; policy issues in the area of merchandise trade and the liberalization of international transactions in services; protection of intellectual property rights and economic development; new regulatory subjects that are emerging in the agenda of trade talks; and enhancing participation of developing countries in the global trading system.

Book Uniting of Europe

Download or read book Uniting of Europe written by Ernst B. Haas and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Notre Dame Press is pleased to bring Ernst Haas's classic work on European integration, The Uniting of Europe, back into print. First published in 1958 and last printed in 1968, this seminal volume is the starting point for anyone interested in the pre-history of the European Union. Haas uses the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) as a case study of the community formation processes that occur across traditional national and state boundaries. Haas points to the ECSC as an example of an organization with the "power to redirect the loyalties and expectations of political actors." In this pathbreaking book Haas contends that, based on his observations of the actual integration process, the idea of a "united Europe" took root in the years immediately following World War II. His careful and rigorous analysis tracks the development of the ECSC, including, in his 1968 preface, a discussion of the eventual loss of the individual identity of the ECSC through its absorption into the new European Community. Featuring a new introduction by Haas analyzing the impact of his book over time, as well as an updated bibliography, The Uniting of Europe is a must-have for political scientists and historians of modern and contemporary Europe. This book is the inaugural volume of Notre Dame's new Contemporary European Politics and Society Series.
