Book excerpt: This paper examines the process of Sri Lanka's trade liberalization and its impact on exports and imports. The primary objective of the study is to estimate impact of trade liberalization on exports and imports of Sri Lanka. Secondary data is used to estimate effects of trade liberalization on exports and imports for the period from 1970 to 2011. In estimating impacts of trade liberalization on export and import sectors total time period is divided into two sub periods of before trade liberalization i.e. (1970-1977) and after trade liberalization i.e. (1977-2011). The study mainly employs simple and multiple regression models to disentangle trade effects. The main empirical results suggest that total exports and imports have grown at a higher rate during the closed economic era than in the open economic era. Further, the study finds that trade liberalization has increased imports by more than exports in Sri Lanka.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the performance and impact of the India–Sri Lanka free trade agreement over the past decade and suggests the way forward. The composition of trade also changed with an increased number of new goods being traded. The book computes indices and suggests scope for deepening economic cooperation between the two countries by pruning the negative lists for trade in goods, identifying potential investment, and suggesting policies for expanding cooperation in services.

Book Sri Lanka s Experience of Economic Liberalization

Download or read book Sri Lanka s Experience of Economic Liberalization written by Kopalapillai Amirthalingam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s Sri Lanka was in the third place in Asia after Japan and Malaysia in terms of per capita GDP. South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia were behind Sri Lanka. However, all these countries have surpassed Sri Lanka very long ago. Many reasons could be attributed for this economic failure. Frequent economic policy changes, extensive welfarism and sporadic insurrections had negative impact on the economy during the pre liberalization regime. However, after the introduction of economic liberalization in 1977 many positive changes occurred on the economy. Firstly, Sri Lanka started to achieve higher rate of economic growth. Secondly, the GDP composition has changed to some extent. Thirdly, unemployment situation has improved after the introduction of liberalization. Fourthly, the rate of investment increased significantly. Finally, the export structure changed significantly from plantation cum agricultural goods to industrial exports, dominantly garment and textiles. The eruption of civil war in 1983 had negative impact on the economy. If there was no war in Sri Lanka the impact of liberalization would have been a different scenario.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the opportunities and risks of the liberalization of trade in services in South Asia. It offers an overview of the entire region on market access and regulatory issues as defined by the GATS framework of the WTO and exposes areas for regional and bilateral liberalization. It provides policymakers and other stakeholders in the region with better comprehension of the problems pertaining to these, and consequently, shows them a clearer vision of how to overcome them. The compilation provides insight into the offensive and defensive interests in trade in services of the whole region. The essays survey the formidable challenges that South Asia faces—cost implications, “policy space” restrictions, stakeholder managing—while trying to comply with the GATS regulations on the one hand, and the often inadequate legal provisions and regulatory structures of the individual countries, on the other. It will hold great value for students, researchers, and faculty working in the fields of Economics and Development Studies and South Asia Studies, besides being a useful resource for policy makers.
