Book Deployment Use and Effect of Real time Traveler Systems

Download or read book Deployment Use and Effect of Real time Traveler Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study on the deployment, use, and effect of real-time traveler information (TI) systems. The main goals were to understand agency dissemination practices, assess the potential effectiveness of TI systems as it relates to traveler perception and use, and suggest best practices for facilitation. It also provides several key outputs to be used by stakeholders: a) survey/interviews of agency representatives, b) surveys and focus groups with travelers to better understand the public's perception/use of TI, c) database of survey responses, d) comparative analysis of agency and public perceptions, e) recommendations of methods for assessing TI, including a "toolbox" of low-cost approaches, f) guidance for features of an ideal TI system, g) discussion of future TI, including cutting edge technologies. Agencies and the public agree that TI should be targeted, easy to use, relevant, clear, trustworthy, reliable, and accurate. Interestingly, there was a call for simple information that can be accessed by most people in a variety of locations (e.g., radio). The authors recommend features of an effective TI system. First, there should be a provision of TI focusing on non-recurring events. Second, a wide array of dissemination methods should be implemented. Finally, TI should align with needs and wants of the public. The report also includes guidance on how agencies can facilitate TI in the future, taking advantage of new technologies, new dissemination methods, and public-private partnerships.

Book Smart Highways

Download or read book Smart Highways written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Accounting Office (GAO) examined the development and application of intelligent vehicle and highway systems (IVHS), more commonly known as smart highways, as a means of reducing traffic congestion. The following questions were addressed: What have the major studies concluded about the potential effects of IVHS, and to what extent are these findings empirically based? What additional information can be learned from IVHS field tests under way? What major obstacles could impede the realization of transportation benefits possible through IVHS technologies? In brief, GAO found that the empirical basis for judging the effects of IVHS is limited but nonetheless positive and promising.

Transportation Research Board and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two conferences on Refocusing Transportation Planning for the 21st Century were held in 1999 following passage of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). The first conference focused on the identification of key trends, issues, and general areas of research. The results of Conference I, which produced stand-alone products, were used as input for Conference II. The second conference had the specific objective of producing research problem statements. Its mission was to review the results of the first conference by developing these statements. Conference II produced a number of detailed research statements that form the basis for the National Agenda for Transportation Planning Research. The proceedings of both conferences are presented in this report.

Book Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads

Download or read book Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads written by C. Michael Walton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhanced diversion of traffic to toll roads would have two benefits: increase toll road usage, and reduce congestion on non-tolled roads. Evaluation of the dual benefits is the primary objective and the essence of this study. The research team first synthesized the state-of-the-art in Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) implementations. Then a commuter survey was conducted in Austin, Texas to examine commuters' travel patterns, preferences and requirements on traveler information, and attitudes toward toll roads and ATIS implementation. Next, based on the survey results, a simulation case study was conducted on the transportation network of Austin, Texas using DYNASMART-P model. Finally, ATIS benefit cost analysis, implementation issues, technologies, funding opportunities, and potential business models were investigated.
