Using the concept of the opportunity for sexual selection, the authors illustrate how and why sexual selection, though restricted to one sex and opposed in the other, is one of the strongest and fastest of all evolutionary forces. Book excerpt: Northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus oregonensis) predation on juvenile salmonids was characterized during 1992 at ten locations in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam and at three locations in John Day Reservoir. During the spring and summer, 1,487 northern squawfish were collected in the lower Columbia River and 202 squawfish were sampled in John Day Reservoir. Gut content data, predator weight, and water temperature were used to compute a consumption index (CI) for northern squawfish, and overall diet was also described. In the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam, northern squawfish diet was primarily fish (spring 69%; summer 53%), most of which were salmonids. Salmonids were also the primary diet component in the Bonneville Dam tailrace, John Day Dam forebay, and the McNary Dam tailrace. Crustaceans were the dominant diet item at the John Day mid-reservoir location, although sample sizes were small. About half of the non-salmonid preyfish were sculpins. The consumption index (CI) of northern squawfish was generally higher during summer than during spring. The highest CI's were observed during summer in the tailrace boat restricted zones of Bonneville Dam (CI = 7.8) and McNary Dam (CI = 4.6). At locations below Bonneville Dam, CI's were relatively low near Covert's Landing and Rooster Rock, higher at four locations between Blue Lake and St. Helens, and low again at three downriver sites (Kalama, Ranier, and Jones Beach). Northern squawfish catches and CI's were noticeably higher throughout the lower Columbia compared to mid-reservoir sites further upriver sampled during 1990--92. Predation may be especially intense in the free-flowing section of the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui; N = 198) ate mostly fish -- 25% salmonids, 29% sculpins, and 46% other fish. Highest catches of smallmouth bass were in the John Day Dam forebay.

Book excerpt: Increases in temperature due to climate change will have large implications for aquatic ecosystems. Warmwater fish species, such as smailmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, may have access to additional favourable thermal habitat under increased surface-water temperatures, thereby shifting the northern limit of the distribution of the species further north in Canada and potentially negatively impacting native fish communities. A database comprised of over 50,000 lakes was assembled consisting of data on geography, lake morphology, water chemistry, climate, and fish community composition. Based on a comparison of several statistical approaches (multiple regression, regression tree, artificial neural networks, and Bayesian multiple regression) and several climate-change scenarios, water temperatures were predicted to increase by as much as 18°C by 2100, with the greatest increase in water temperature in northern Canada. By 2100, smallmouth bass thermal habitat is predicted to shift to the north with the majority of Canadian lakes expected to contain suitable thermal habitat. A comparison of logistic regression, classification tree, linear discriminant analysis, and artificial neural networks indicated that smallmouth bass distribution is predicted by winter and summer air temperatures. Climate-change modeling, in conjunction with artificial neural networks, predicted that smallmouth bass will have suitable thermal habitat throughout the majority of aquatic systems in the continental United States and Canada by 2100. The presence of smallmouth bass will negatively impact native fish communities, particularly native lake trout populations. Lake trout populations residing in smaller lakes are more vulnerable to the effects of smallmouth bass establishment due to the decreased presence of alternate prey resources. Examination of the pelagic and littoral forage fish communities identified nearly 9,700 lake trout populations threatened by 2100AD under climate-change scenarios, due to the potential invasion of smallmouth bass. The current range expansion of smallmouth bass has been facilitated by stocking by governmental agencies, unauthorized and accidental introduction by anglers, and dispersal through drainage networks. This stresses the importance of intensifying public education and regulation to limit the potential dispersal of invasive species, such as smallmouth bass.

Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanisms regulating population fluctuations, such as births, reproduction, and deaths, remains a persistent question in ecology. Mortality can be incurred at any point during the lifecycle, but mortality rates can be high for juvenile animals in particular. One source of this early life history mortality is via predation. Accurately measuring predation rates requires intensive studies, and is further complicated by variability in habitats and changes in the extent of spatial and temporal overlap between predators and prey. In this study, we examined abundance, spatial distributions and diets of two piscivorous fishes and their predation impact on juvenile salmonids in a well-studied large western lake, Lake Washington. We addressed the following questions: (i) What is the abundance of cutthroat trout and northern pikeminnow in Lake Washington? (ii) At what rates do these predators consume juvenile salmon throughout the year, and how many total juvenile salmon are consumed given the predator population size? Understanding which factors influence predation and the extent of this predatory impact requires temporally and spatially explicit data on the interaction between predators and prey, including both juvenile sockeye salmon and the main alternative prey fish species. To observe these interactions, we used several overlapping sampling types across trophic levels. We used a Chapman-modified population estimation procedure to estimate a cutthroat trout population size of 22,791 ≥300 mm FL and the same procedure to estimate a northern pikeminnow population size of 13,582 ≥300 mm FL. We also used a relative catch method to estimate a northern pikeminnow population size of 112,816 ≥300 mm FL. The magnitude of predation on juvenile salmon and other prey fishes varied considerably among months and between cutthroat trout and northern pikeminnow, between small and large size classes of each predator species, and between years. In 2015, predation mortality of lake entry 2015 (sub-yearling) sockeye salmon was 20% of fry production in that year, and predation losses of lake entry 2014 (yearling) sockeye were 56% of pre-smolt production. In 2016, mortality of lake entry 2016 (sub-yearling) sockeye was 44% of fry production, and predation losses of lake entry 2014 sockeye were 473% of pre-smolt production of that year. Our work shows that the current predation rate is high enough and these predator populations are of sufficient size that predation is a significant source of mortality for juvenile sockeye and Chinook salmon in this system. This work highlights a scenario of combined physical and biological factors that influence mortality in juvenile fish, and can potentially inform the potential for predation mortality in other lake systems.
