Book Forest Hydrology and Watershed

Download or read book Forest Hydrology and Watershed written by Fan-Rui Meng and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrological processes in forested watersheds are influenced by environmental, physiological, and biometric factors such as precipitation, radiation, temperature, species type, leaf area, and extent and structure of forest ecosystems. Over the past two centuries, forest coverage and forest structures have been impacted globally by anthropogenic activities, for example, forest harvesting, and conversion of forested landscapes for plantations and urbanization. In addition, since the industrial revolution, climate change has resulted in profound impacts on forest ecosystems due to higher carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration or CO2 fertilization, warmer temperatures, changes in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and natural disturbances. As a result, hydrological processes in forested watersheds have been altered by these natural and anthropogenic factors and these changes are expected to accelerate due to future changing climatic conditions. Hence, understanding how various environmental, physiological, and physical drivers interactively influence hydrological and biogeochemical processes in forest ecosystems is critical for sustainable water supply in forested watersheds. About 21% of the global population depends on water sources that originate in forested catchments where forest coverage larger than 30%. Furthermore, there are knowledge gaps in our understanding of the mechanism of hydrological and hydrochemical cycles in forested watersheds. This Special Issue addresses these gaps in our knowledge and includes twelve papers in the following three major research themes in forest watershed areas.

Book Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean

Download or read book Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean written by Lauretta Marie Burke and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many coastal communities in Latin America and the Caribbean depend on the resources provided by reefs for their livelihoods. The Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean project is a response to an information need. The primary goal is to raise awareness and improve management by improving the knowledge base on the status of and threats to coral reefs.

Book The Light Requirements of Seagrasses

Download or read book The Light Requirements of Seagrasses written by W. Judson Kenworthy and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This workshop was convened in response to the recognition that extremely valuable economic, wildlife and aesthetic resources have been lost during the last several decades as a direct result of seagrass declines throughout our Nation's coastlines. The central role of seagrasses in maintaining the physical, chemical and biological integrity of many coastal ecosystems has been well documented (McRoy and Helfferich, 1977; Phillips and McRoy, 1980; Zieman, 1982; Phillips, 1984; Thayer et. al., 1984; Zieman and Zieman, 1989). Seagrass habitats provide nursery and feeding grounds for fish, shellfish and wildlife, including several endangered and numerous economically valuable species"--Background, paragraph 1.

Book excerpt: As part of the U.S. Govenment's program to assist Central America in the recovery from Hurricane Mitch, the USGS conducted...activities in Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala. This effort was designed to strengthen the affected countries' ability at both the national and local levels to mitigate, prepare for, and respond to future natural disasters by: facilitating access to basic data and information such as maps and aerial photography; conducting flood and landslide risk assessments; installing national stream-flow monitoring systems; conducting coastal assessments of biological resources; developing an internet data clearinghouse in each country; providing geographic information system (GIS) hardware and software, and other equipment for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and urban management; and strengthening the capacity of counterpart agencies by formal training courses and by including their specialists in project activities.
