Book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting

Download or read book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting written by Catherine Rich and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While certain ecological problems associated with artificial night lighting are widely known-for instance, the disorientation of sea turtle hatchlings by beachfront lighting-the vast range of influences on all types of animals and plants is only beginning to be recognized. From nest choice and breeding success of birds to behavioral and physiological changes in salamanders, many organisms are seriously affected by human alterations in natural patterns of light and dark. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting is the first book to consider the environmental effects of the intentional illumination of the night. It brings together leading scientists from around the world to review the state of knowledge on the subject and to describe specific effects that have been observed across a full range of taxonomic groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and plants. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting provides a scientific basis to begin addressing the challenge of conserving the nighttime environment. It cogently demonstrates the vital importance of this until-now neglected topic and is an essential new work for conservation planners, researchers, and anyone concerned with human impacts on the natural world.

Book Environmental Assesment on the Effects of Issuing Incidental Take Permit No 16230 to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries for the Incidental Take of Sea Turtles Associated with the Otherwise Lawful Commercial Inshore Gillnet Fishery in North Carolina Inshore State Waters

Download or read book Environmental Assesment on the Effects of Issuing Incidental Take Permit No 16230 to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries for the Incidental Take of Sea Turtles Associated with the Otherwise Lawful Commercial Inshore Gillnet Fishery in North Carolina Inshore State Waters written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) proposes to issue an incidental take permit (ITP) to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (NCDMF), under Section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.), and the regulations governing the incidental taking of endangered and threatened species (50 CFR 222.307). The ITP would authorize the incidental capture, with some mortality, of five species of endangered and threatened sea turtles, including green (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles, in the North Carolina inshore gillnet fishery and would be valid for ten years. Since 2000, NMFS has issued four separate incidental take permits to NCDMF for the incidental take of sea turtles in inshore gillnet fisheries occurring in Pamlico Sound. Since 2006, incidental take of sea turtles has been documented in areas outside Pamlico Sound, which are not covered under an existing ITP. In 2010, the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic filed suit against NCDMF and the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission (NCMFC) on behalf of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (Beasley Center) for the illegal taking of sea turtles in state regulated inshore gillnet fisheries. As a result of the lawsuit and resulting settlement agreement, NCDMF has amended their commercial fishing regulations for their inshore gillnet fishery to minimize the incidental capture of sea turtles. NCDMF has also submitted a completed application to NMFS for an ESA Section 10(a)(1)(B) ITP, including a conservation plan, for the operation of the state-wide inshore gillnet fishery with measures intended to further monitor, minimize, and mitigate the impacts of incidental take in the fishery to the maximum extent practicable.

Book Guidelines to Reduce Sea Turtle Mortality in Fishing Operations

Download or read book Guidelines to Reduce Sea Turtle Mortality in Fishing Operations written by Eric Gilman and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea turtles are affected by a range of different factors, some natural and others caused by human activities, including fishing operation. As a result, all sea turtles species whose conservation status has been assessed are considered to be threatened or endangered. These guidelines provide assistance for the preparation of national or multilateral fisheries management measures and industry initiatives that may help to conserve sea turtles by reducing the negative impacts that fisheries may have on them. They present our best understanding of how to reduce the proportion of caught turtles that are killed as a result of interactions with marine capture fisheries. These guidelines include information about how to change fishing gear and fishing methods and how the fishing industry can adopt voluntary approaches to reduce sea turtle mortality.--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Endangered and Threatened Species Determination of Nine Distinct Population Segments of Loggerhead Sea Turtles as Endangered Or Threatened Us Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation Fws 2018 Edition written by The Law The Law Library and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endangered and Threatened Species - Determination of Nine Distinct Population Segments of Loggerhead Sea Turtles as Endangered or Threatened (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Species - Determination of Nine Distinct Population Segments of Loggerhead Sea Turtles as Endangered or Threatened (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 We (NMFS and USFWS; also collectively referred to as the Services) have determined that the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is composed of nine distinct population segments (DPSs) that constitute "species" that may be listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In this final rule, we are listing four DPSs as threatened and five as endangered under the ESA. We will propose to designate critical habitat for the two loggerhead sea turtle DPSs occurring within the United States in a future rulemaking. We encourage interested parties to provide any information related to the identification of critical habitat and essential physical or biological features for this species, as well as economic or other relevant impacts of designation of critical habitat, to assist us with this effort. This book contains: - The complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Species - Determination of Nine Distinct Population Segments of Loggerhead Sea Turtles as Endangered or Threatened (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section
