Book excerpt: Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) las prácticas de alimentación adecuada son fundamentales para la supervivencia, el crecimiento, el desarrollo, la salud y la nutrición de los lactantes y niños en cualquier lugar del mundo. Partiendo de este principio, la duración óptima de la lactancia materna exclusiva es uno de los aspectos cruciales de salud pública que la OMS estudia continuamente. Desde hace ya tiempo, existe consenso sobre la necesidad de la lactancia materna exclusiva; no obstante, se ha debatido extensamente acerca de su duración óptima. Según la Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar (ENDES IV) Continua 2004-2005. La lactancia exclusiva en niños menores de 6 meses en el 2000 era de 67% y del 2004-2005 fue de 63% lo que evidencia una disminución significativa en las prácticas de exclusividad de la lactancia. Se puede afirmar que la promoción de la lactancia materna exclusiva durante los primeros seis meses de vida, es la medida sanitaria de mayor impacto para bajar la mortalidad infantil. Siendo la consejería la principal actividad para emitir los mensajes de lactancia materna. Las alumnas de Nutrición Humana de la Universidad Peruana Unión adquirirán competencias en el manejo adecuado de la lactancia materna. Se realizó un curso teórico práctico de 20 horas de capacitación en el manejo adecuado de la lactancia materna a las alumnas del primer año de Nutrición, con 18 horas teóricas y 2 horas de aplicación clínica en el Centro de Salud Materno Infantil Miguel Grau. Se aplicó un Pre test y Postest para evaluar los conocimientos y una “Guía de Cotejo para evaluar las competencias de las alumnas en el manejo de la Lactancia Materna con supervisión dirigida. Las alumnas de Nutrición Humana adquirieron conocimientos en lactancia materna en un 100%, el promedio de los resultados del pre test es 8.87 y el pos test 18.8 de 20 puntos. En adquisición de competencia. El 100% de las alumnas obtuvo entre 15.3 a 19.5 de 20 puntos. La “Guía de Cotejo de Competencias en el manejo adecuado de la lactancia materna” se aplicó a las alumnas que recibieron la capacitación, ya que evalúa en qué medida adquirieron competencias en el manejo de la lactancia; evidenciándose los siguientes resultados: El 91% de las alumnas capacitadas demuestran habilidades y destrezas en técnicas de extracción manual y conservación de leche materna. El 94% de las alumnas capacitadas tienen habilidades y destrezas en reconocer y sugerir las posibles soluciones a los problemas relacionadas a la lactancia materna. El 89% de las alumnas tiene buenas prácticas de consejería en la lactancia materna.

Fragmentation has quickly become a field separate from general ecology. which underscores the severity of the situation since we as a planet are rapidly losing habitat of all types to human disturbance. Getting ecologists. particularly primatologists. to admit that they study in fragments is not easy. In the field of primatology. one studies many things. but rarely do those things (genetics. behavior. population dynamics) get called out as studies in fragmentation. For some reason "fragmentation primatologists" fear that our work is somehow "not as good" as those who study in continuous habitat. We worry that perhaps our subjects are not demonstrating as robust behaviors as they "should" given fragmented or disturbed habitat conditions. I had a colleague openly state that she did not work in fragmented forests. that she merely studied behavior when it was clear that her study sites. everyone of them. was isolated habitat. Our desire to be just another link in the data chain for wild primates is so strong that it makes us deny what kinds of habitats we are working in. However.

In 1969 when the Convention for the Conservation of the Vicuña was drafted, in an attempt to save the vicuña from its tumbling decline towards extinction, both the science and the philosophy of wildlife conservation were radically different. It is thus a tribute to the prescience of those involved at the time that the rescue plan had, even through the harsh lens of hindsight, a d- tinctly Twenty First Century flavour. After all, it was predicated on the expectation that if vicuña could be saved, they would one day become a valued asset, generating revenue for the human communities that fostered their survival. Embodied in this aspiration are the main structures of modern biodiversity conservation – not only is it to be underpinned by science, but that science should be of both the natural and the social genres, woven into inter-disciplinarity, and thereby taking heed of e- nomics, governance, ownership and the like, alongside biology. In addition, it should include, as a major strut, the human dimension, taking account of the affected constituencies with their varied stakes in alternative outcomes. This c- temporary framework for thinking about biodiversity conservation is inseparable from such wider, and inherently political, notions as community-based conser- tion and ultimately sustainable use.
