Book Impact Strength of the Uranium 6 Weight Percent Niobium Alloy Between 198 and 200 C

Download or read book Impact Strength of the Uranium 6 Weight Percent Niobium Alloy Between 198 and 200 C written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine if a ductile-to-brittle transition wxisted for the uranium-6 wt % niobium (U-6Nb) alloy. Standard V-notched Charpy bars were made from both solution-quenched and solution-quenched and aged U-6Nb alloy and were tested between -198° and +200°C. It was found that a sharp ductile-brittle transition does not exist for the alloy. A linear relationship existed between test temperature and impact strength, and the alloy retained a significant amount of impact strength even at very low temperatures. 9 figures.

Book Effects of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Uranium 6 Niobium Alloy

Download or read book Effects of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Uranium 6 Niobium Alloy written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging studies on uranium-6 weight percent niobium alloy were performed at temperatures of 500 and 600°C. Mechanical-property measurements and microstructural analyses were used to characterize the aging response of the alloy. An attractive combination of mechanical properties was produced by aging at 550 to 600°C; namely, a 0.2% offset yield strength greater than 730 MPa with an elongation of 15 to 18%. Increasing the aging time at temperature minimized the variability in mechanical properties. Niobium homogeneity and heating rate influenced the properties and microstructure of the alloy.

Book Effect of Aging on the General Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Uranium 6 Wt Niobium Alloy

Download or read book Effect of Aging on the General Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Uranium 6 Wt Niobium Alloy written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of the uranium-6 wt percent niobium alloy change with aging time and temperature. In general, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness reach a peak, while elongation becomes a minimum at aging temperatures between 400 and 500°C. The first optical evidence of a second phase was in the 400°C-aged alloy, while complete transformation to a two-phase structure was seen in the 600°C-aged alloy. The maximum-strength conditions correlate with the minimum stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance. The maximum SCC resistance is found in the as-quenched and 150, 200, and 600$sup 0$C-aged specimens. The as-quenched and 300°C-aged specimens had the greatest resistance to general corrosion in aqueous chloride solutions; the 600°C-aged specimen had the least resistance. (auth).

Book Shape Memory Effect in Uranium niobium Alloys Below Room Temperature Final Report 6 2 to 7 0 Wt Nb

Download or read book Shape Memory Effect in Uranium niobium Alloys Below Room Temperature Final Report 6 2 to 7 0 Wt Nb written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temperature dependence of the martensitic .gamma.° to .cap alpha.11 phase transformation between 25°C and -198°C in water-quenched uranium-niobium alloys between 6.2 and 7.0 wt % niobium was determined using cold-stage x-ray diffraction experiments. Lowering the temperature promoted the transformation to .cap alpha.11 but complete transformation was never observed. The transformation was reversible with little or no hysteresis. Aging the alloys for two hours at 200°C stabilized the .gamma.° phase and retarded the martensitic transformation. The compositions where M/sub s/ and M/sub f/ equaled room temperature were 5.80 and 7.04 wt % Nb respectively. At -196°C these values were approximately 0.25 wt % higher. Two alloys were selected as potential candidates for a uranium alloy clamp.

Book Uranium Enrichment and Nuclear Weapon Proliferation

Download or read book Uranium Enrichment and Nuclear Weapon Proliferation written by Allan S. Krass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, this book presents both the technical and political information necessary to evaluate the emerging threat to world security posed by recent advances in uranium enrichment technology. Uranium enrichment has played a relatively quiet but important role in the history of efforts by a number of nations to acquire nuclear weapons and by a number of others to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. For many years the uranium enrichment industry was dominated by a single method, gaseous diffusion, which was technically complex, extremely capital-intensive, and highly inefficient in its use of energy. As long as this remained true, only the richest and most technically advanced nations could afford to pursue the enrichment route to weapon acquisition. But during the 1970s this situation changed dramatically. Several new and far more accessible enrichment techniques were developed, stimulated largely by the anticipation of a rapidly growing demand for enrichment services by the world-wide nuclear power industry. This proliferation of new techniques, coupled with the subsequent contraction of the commercial market for enriched uranium, has created a situation in which uranium enrichment technology might well become the most important contributor to further nuclear weapon proliferation. Some of the issues addressed in this book are: A technical analysis of the most important enrichment techniques in a form that is relevant to analysis of proliferation risks; A detailed projection of the world demand for uranium enrichment services; A summary and critique of present institutional non-proliferation arrangements in the world enrichment industry, and An identification of the states most likely to pursue the enrichment route to acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium written by A.K. Suri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.
