Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impact of the Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth on Forest Recreation in the Blue Mountains A survey of recreationists, resort owners, packer-guides, motel operators, and employees of natural resource agencies revealed little evidence that a recent outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth had significant or widespread influence on recreation in northeastern Oregon. Book Douglas fir Tussock Moth

Download or read book Douglas fir Tussock Moth written by Robert W. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography includes references to 338 papers. Each deals in some way with either the Douglas-fir tussock moth, Orgyia pseudotsugata (McDunnough), or a related species. Specifically, 210 publications and 82 unpublished documents make some reference, at least, to the Douglas-fir tussock moth; 55 are concerned with other species in the same genus. The subject matter in each paper has been indexed to at least one general topic (General, Taxonomy, Biology, Host Relationships, Outbreaks, Control, Related Material). Most of these general topics have been subdivided into more specific headings. For example, Host Relationships includes separate categories for white fir, grand fir, and Douglas-fir. A complete listing of the references in each general and specific category is presented in the index.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radial Growth in Grand Fir and Douglas-Fir Related to Defoliation by the Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth in the Blue Mountains Outbreak A recent extensive outbreak in the Blue Mountains of Oregon and washington offered the opportunity to study tree damage resulting from defoliation by extremely dense populations of dftm. The objective of studies begun in 1972 was to use defoliation intensity in 1972 and 1973 as a predictor of tree damage during and after the outbreak. Two important forms of damage, tree mortality and top - kill, have already been summarized from this study (wickman l978a). The three forms of damage have also been mathematically represented in the dftm outbreak model (overton and Colbert This paper summarizes the effects of defoliation on radial growth during and immediately after the outbreak. Book Effects of Douglas fir Tussock Moth Infestation on Outdoor Recreationists in the Blue Mountains Oregon

Download or read book Effects of Douglas fir Tussock Moth Infestation on Outdoor Recreationists in the Blue Mountains Oregon written by Philip B. Delucchi and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Douglas-fir tussock moth, spray control program and salvage operations have had on outdoor recreationists in the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon during the 1972-1974 outbreak. Eight hundred ninety-four parties were interviewed one year after the outbreak in four separate surveys. The objective was to determine the respondents' awareness of the insect problem, and their behavior and attitude toward the problems and changes. The study indicated that, over a long period of time, the secondary stage of the infestation has a greater impact and is of more concern than the direct annoyance and nuisance of the primary stage of the insect outbreak. The greatest direct change attributable to the tussock moth was the visual appearance in the landscape of dead and dying trees. Comments about new roads, logging, and changes in the game populations and habitat were more noticeable and mentioned more often than those of the Douglas-fir tussock moth. It is important that future environmental statements and analyses reports consider both the primary and secondary stage activity effects of insect and disease control projects on recreation in the future.

Book A Case Study of a Douglas fir Tussock Moth Outbreak and Stand Conditions 10 Years Later

Download or read book A Case Study of a Douglas fir Tussock Moth Outbreak and Stand Conditions 10 Years Later written by Boyd E. Wickman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree damage occurring immediately after an outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth, Orgyia Pseudotsugata McD., and stand conditions 10 years later are described. Because of increased radial growth and ingrowth in the 10-year postoutbreak period, good evidence indicates that tree damage caused by the tussock moth may not be as severe in the overall stand dynamics as previously pictured. The insect probably plays a key role as a phytophagous regulator of primary production in some second-growth white fir stands in California and elsewhere.
