Book Assessing the Demographic Impact of Development Projects

Download or read book Assessing the Demographic Impact of Development Projects written by A. S. Oberai and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1992 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little is currently known about the demographic impact of most development projects and the ways in which this impact can be assessed. This book, based on studies in Third World countries, focuses on conceptual, methodological and policy issues in its evaluation of the demographic impact of development projects. The author examines whether demographic effects can be assessed and why development planners should be interested in the results. A.S. Oberai examines to what extent economic and social ranges generated by specific development interventions have influenced demographic behavior in a particular context. He suggests how desired effects can be enhanced and undesirable effects minimized by policy-makers and planners in developing countries in order to deal with problems of population growth and its distribution. The major shortcomings of existing methodologies are identified and future directions which research might take are outlined. The study is based on a synthesis of country studiesreviewing the demographic impact of development projects carried out in Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It also includes analyses of the demographic impact of development interventions in several other countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, and Nigeria. Published for the International Labour Organisation

Book Rural urban Migration in Developing Countries

Download or read book Rural urban Migration in Developing Countries written by Somik V. Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The migration of labor from rural to urban areas is an important part of the urbanization process in developing countries. Even though it has been the focus of abundant research over the past five decades, some key policy questions have not found clear answers yet. To what extent is internal migration a desirable phenomenon and under what circumstances? Should governments intervene and, if so, with what types of interventions? What should be their policy objectives? To shed light on these important issues, the authors survey the existing theoretical models and their conflicting policy implications and discuss the policies that may be justified based on recent relevant empirical studies. A key limitation is that much of the empirical literature does not provide structural tests of the theoretical models, but only provides partial findings that can support or invalidate intuitions and in that sense, support or invalidate the policy implications of the models. The authors' broad assessment of the literature is that migration can be beneficial or at least be turned into a beneficial phenomenon so that in general migration restrictions are not desirable. They also identify some data issues and research topics which merit further investigation. "--World Bank web site.

Book Internal Migration and Development

Download or read book Internal Migration and Development written by Priya Deshingkar and published by UN. This book was released on 2005 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report argues that internal migration can play an important role in poverty reduction and economic development; internal migration should therefore not be controlled or actively discouraged. Policy should instead concern itself with ways of maximizing the potential benefits of migration to the individual concerned and society at large. While there have been few formal efforts to estimate the economic contribution of migrant labour, it is evident that many developing countries would probably not have had the roads, buildings, manufacturing and trade centres that they have today had it not been for migration.

A large share of international migrants originated from rural areas. This is an important part of the structural transformation of an economy, and is an important part of the structural transformation of an economy. Examining the complex interlinkages of migration with agriculture, This report examines the existing literature and provides evidence from both developed and developing countries, focusing on why people from rural areas decide to migrate. It explores the drivers of migration, both international and internal, and aims to deepen our understanding of the interlinkages with agriculture, food security and rural development. Book Migration Urbanization and Development

Download or read book Migration Urbanization and Development written by Richard E. Bilsborrow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal migration and urbanization are key dimensions of the process of socioeconomic development. The unprecedented movement of peoples within the borders of their own countries is one of the greatest transformations witnessed in the 20th century. Policy analysts, especially those from developing countries where internal migration can be felt at first hand, view migration as one of the most important factors affecting the course of development. It is within this context that UNFPA convened the Symposium on Internal Migration and Urbanization in Developing Countries in January 1996 in preparation for the United Nations World Conference on Human Settlements in Istanbul in June 1996. The final results of the symposium are found in this book. This volume provides a better understanding, at global level, of internal migration issues of concern to policy analysts.
