Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses social innovations by cooperatives from the Asia and Pacific region. Social innovations emerge when the state and market in developing countries find it difficult to solve problems such as poverty, hunger, ill health, poor education systems, inadequate drinking water and poor sanitation. These countries also face barriers to economic growth such as climate change, poor governance, unequal opportunities and social exclusion. This volume therefore addresses the following questions. What are the distinctive features of social innovations by cooperatives? How social innovations bring in changes in the process and outcome of development? After presenting theories of social innovation and a critical review of cooperatives and social innovation, the book presents 15 chapters on social innovations by cooperatives in the Asia Pacific region. These social innovations are related to health insurance, community based tourism, disaster response, climate smart agriculture, use of social media for youth empowerment, training for the emergence of second-line leaders in cooperatives, social inclusion through innovative finance, profitable marketing of organic produce to strengthen economic status of small farmers, digital auction and value addition for income security of farmer members, collaboration between cooperative members and workers for the mutual benefit, worker cooperatives, women leadership and participation, building union-cooperative partnership in finance and rating of cooperatives to promote transparency and accountability. A chapter on innovative services of cooperatives during the time of Covid19 is also included. This volume will be quite significant for co-operators, researchers, teachers, practitioners and policy-makers at the global level. The theme is relevant for international development community and national cooperatives with concern for their communities, which is the seventh cooperative principle of International Cooperative Alliance and the Sustainable Development Goal of the UN.

Book excerpt: Agricultural entrepreneurs in conflict and post-conflict regions face special challenges; not just everyday personal risks, but also the difficulties of building small businesses when real or threatened violence can disrupt business growth cycles and economic security. Alongside establishing secure institutions, building a secure economy is rightly seen as the best way for conflict-torn regions to establish a peaceful future. But current agricultural entrepreneurship training and development starts from an assumption of peace, meaning that it is not always fit for purpose. The result is sub-optimal program design and inefficient use of resources. A product of a collaboration of experts in the fields of agri-business, agricultural marketing, and international development, this book gives officials and agencies developing entrepreneurship programs the practical real-life examples they need.

Book Competitiveness of dairy sector with special focus on co operatives in India

Download or read book Competitiveness of dairy sector with special focus on co operatives in India written by Ranjith Kumar P.S and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian dairy industry has grown consistently ever since the white revolution of the 1970s, making India, the world’s largest producer of milk. Milk production in India has been growing at over 4% annually and its share in milk production in the world has increased to 17 per cent. India’s estimated milk production in 2015-16 was 155.49mt and continued to be the largest milk producing nation, which is about 6.28 per cent higher than last year. Estimated per capita availability in 2015-16 was 337 grams per day, an increase of 4.7 per cent over the previous year (Anonymous, 2016a). Despite the increase in production, a demand supply gap has become imminent in the dairy industry due to the changing consumption habits, dynamic demographic patterns and the rapid urbanization of rural India. Indian dairy landscape is dominated by large vertically integrated dairy co-operatives like Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), Karnataka Milk Federation and NDDB-led Mother Dairy. In the private sector, Britannia isn’t a vertically integrated dairy company while Nestle is only partially integrated. Products from these companies are present across the country. Other private dairy companies like Hatsun Agro, Heritage Foods, Parag Milk Foods, Prabhat Dairy and Kwality are vertically integrated dairy companies but have a largely regional presence (Anonymous, 2016a). GCMMF sells products under brand name AMUL, is the leading player in the dairy industry with a market share of 16% followed by Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd. (9%), Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Ltd. (8%), GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Limited (6%) and Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Ltd. (5%). Some of the major private players include Hatsun Agro (2%), Heritage Foods (2%), Nestle India (2%), Mother Dairy Calcutta (2%), Hindustan Unilever (HUL) (1%), VRS Foods (0.9%), Britannia (0.7%) and Vadilal (0.7%).
