Book excerpt: The Canadian experience with a floating exchange rate regime can shed some light on the question of whether A question of current interest in many parts of the world is whether with growing economic integration among groups of countries makes a fixed exchange rate, or even a common currency, becomes more desirable. This paper looks at the lessons that one may draw from tThe Canadian experience, with a floating exchange rate regime, especially since the inception of the 1989 U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, suggests. We find that exchange rate flexibility has not prevented economic integration between Canada and the United States from increasing substantially, during the 1990s, and has played a useful role in buffering the Canadian economy against asymmetric external shocks. A fixed exchange rate thus does not seem to be a prerequisite for economic integration. It may, however, yield substantial have benefits for some countries that lack monetary credibility or that may be tempted by self-destructive beggar-thy-neighbor policies.

Book On the Canadian Dollar

Download or read book On the Canadian Dollar written by John Earl Floyd and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: In addition to its insightful analysis of the public policy implications of the Canadian dollar, this monograph does much more. In Chapter 1 it sets the stage and presents a number of popular fallacious views about the dollar crisis. Chapter 2 examines recent trends in unemployment, inflation, domestic and foreign interest rates, and in the value of our dollar in terms of the U.S. dollar and other major currencies. Chapter 3 then proceeds with an analysis of the fundamental factors determining the international value of the Canadian dollar in the long run. The short-run factors determining the dollar's value are addressed in Chapter 4, followed by a discussion of the relationship between interest rates and the dollar in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 investigates the reasons for the most recent decline in the dollar and considers what, if anything, can and should be done about it. The final chapter deals with the question of whether we should be losing any sleep over the problems of the Canadian dollar.

Book Towards North American Monetary Union

Download or read book Towards North American Monetary Union written by Eric Helleiner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that Canada's deepening economic integration with the United States and the worldwide trend towards currency blocs will eventually lead to a North American monetary union. In the first detailed analysis of Canadian exchange rate politics, Eric Helleiner challenges this view.Helleiner finds little support in the US for the concessions that would be necessary to make a North American monetary union palatable in Canada. Comparing the US Federal Reserve and the European Monetary Union, he argues that Canada would exercise far less influence within a North American monetary union than individual countries do within the European community. He also analyses the seemingly paradoxical support of Quebec sovereignists for free trade and monetary union.Towards North American Monetary Union'explores Canada's unusually strong commitment throughout the twentieth century to a floating exchange rate for its national currency - a commitment that Heilleiner argues is likely to endure.

Book Canada s Pioneering Experience with a Flexible Exchange Rate in the 1950s

Download or read book Canada s Pioneering Experience with a Flexible Exchange Rate in the 1950s written by Michael D. Bordo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper revisits Canada's pioneering experience with floating exchange rate over the period 1950-1962. It examines whether the floating rate was the best option for Canada in the 1950s by developing and estimating a New Keynesian small open economy model of the Canadian economy. The model is then used to conduct a counterfactual analysis of the impact of different monetary policies and exchange rate regimes. The main finding indicates that the flexible exchange rate helped reduce the volatility of key macro-economic variables. The Canadian monetary authorities, however, clearly did not understand all of the implications of conducting monetary policy under a flexible exchange rate and a high degree of capital mobility. The paper confirms that monetary policy was more volatile in the post-1957 period and Canada's macroeconomic performance suffered as a result.

Book Trade and Tax Policy Inflation and Exchange Rates

Download or read book Trade and Tax Policy Inflation and Exchange Rates written by Assaf Razin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ass a f R a z i nand Hans-Jiirgen Vosgerau The eight chapters of this volume have been grouped into two parts. Part A of contains chapters which are mainly monetary in character, whereas real aspects international economics are treated in Part B. It goes without saying that this is only a device for structuring the field. In substance most chapters reveal the close connections between real and monetary aspects. Part A on "Inflation, Exchange Rates, and Macro-Economic Adjustment in the Global Economy" consists of four papers. In recent years, an inflation targeting framework for monetary policy has been adopted by New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Australia, and Spain (in chronological order). The use of inflation targeting can be viewed as a further step in the evolution of monetary policy techniques adopted by central banks. A common feature of the countries that have adopted inflation targets is the relatively poor inflation record over the last 30 years compared with other industrial countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Japan and the United States. Because of their relatively good inflation record, this latter group of countries has not explicitly adopted inflation targeting. With, or without, explicit inflation targeting the monetary policy credibility hinges on the independence of the central bank. Alex Cukierman addresses the issue of central bank independence by surveying alternative ways to characterize independence.

Book Two Percent Target

Download or read book Two Percent Target written by David E. W. Laidler and published by Institut C.D. Howe. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transition from the decades of high & volatile inflation of the 1970s & 1980s to the stable monetary environment of the 1990s and documents the role of monetary policy in bringing about this transition. Part I reviews Canadian monetary policy and its background since the early 1990s, and ends with an overview of the evolution of the debates surrounding monetary policy and inflation. Part II begins with discussion of central banking in general and its development in Canada in particular. It then looks at the economics of monetary policy: what it can & cannot do and how changes in the stance of the central bank work their way through the economy. It ends by discussing how monetary & fiscal policy interact and the nature of democratic control over the central bank. Part III examines the experience of the past decade related to the conduct of monetary policy in the context of international & domestic economic developments. It also details the framework for monetary policy in Canada as well as the major changes in the Bank of Canada's operating procedures since the early 1990s. The final part draws some conclusions from recent Canadian experience with low inflation, assesses alternatives to current monetary policy arrangements, and speculates about directions for such arrangements in the years ahead.

Book How to Improve Inflation Targeting in Canada

Download or read book How to Improve Inflation Targeting in Canada written by Mr.Maurice Obstfeld and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routine publication of the forecast path for the policy interest rate (i.e. “conventional forward guidance”) would improve the transparency of monetary policy. It would also improve policy effectiveness through its influence on expectations, particularly when there is a risk of low inflation, and the policy rate is constrained by the effective lower bound. Model simulations indicate that a potent macroeconomic strategy, for returning the Canadian economy to potential, combines conventional forward guidance with a fiscal stimulus. As a response to the effective lower bound constraint, and the decline in the world equilibrium real interest rate, this strategy is preferable to raising the inflation target.

Book excerpt: This commentary first describes the current monetary order in Canada (a central bank, floating exchange rate, domestic inflation target, & institutional accountability). It then examines various options proposed by critics of this order, such as a pegged US/Canadian dollar exchange rate, a currency union, and unilateral adoption of the US dollar. The advantages & drawbacks of each are compared to the current order. Areas where US co-operation affects the attractiveness of an option are identified and the likelihood of such co-operation is evaluated.
