Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Science Methods for Clinical Researchers addresses the specific challenges faced by clinicians without a conventional science background. The aim of the book is to introduce the reader to core experimental methods commonly used to answer questions in basic science research and to outline their relative strengths and limitations in generating conclusive data. This book will be a vital companion for clinicians undertaking laboratory-based science. It will support clinicians in the pursuit of their academic interests and in making an original contribution to their chosen field. In doing so, it will facilitate the development of tomorrow's clinician scientists and future leaders in discovery science. - Serves as a helpful guide for clinical researchers who lack a conventional science background - Organized around research themes pertaining to key biological molecules, from genes, to proteins, cells, and model organisms - Features protocols, techniques for troubleshooting common problems, and an explanation of the advantages and limitations of a technique in generating conclusive data - Appendices provide resources for practical research methodology, including legal frameworks for using stem cells and animals in the laboratory, ethical considerations, and good laboratory practice (GLP)

Download or read book Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy written by F. W. D. Rost and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-07-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative fluorescence microscopy is concerned with making measurements from fluorescent specimens in a fluorescence microscope, by measuring fluorescence emission from a defined area or areas of a specimen. This technique is most commonly used to determine the amount of some specific substance, such as DNA, in some particular area of a cell. But it has many other uses; for example, it can be used to identify certain substances in the cell by examining their fluorescence characteristics. This book is a complete guide to this technique for all biologists. It describes the principles and applications of quantitative fluorescence microscopy and also gives much practical information about the instrumentation required. There is also a discussion of the exciting developments in confocal fluorescence microscopy which allows the three dimensional distribution of particular substances to be determined. Everyone presently using this technique, or wishing to start using it will need to read this book.

Download or read book Rapid Virus Diagnosis written by P. S. Gardner and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Virus Diagnosis: Application of Immunofluorescence presents developments in immunofluorescence as a technique for the diagnosis of virus infections. It discusses the effective and rapid methods for the diagnosis of virus infections. It addresses the application of fluorescent antibody techniques to the diagnosis and the investigation of virus infections and the assessment of their value both to the clinician and to the virologist. Some of the topics covered in the book are the fluorescence microscopy; nature of fluorescence; filter systems; transmitted light microscopy; interference filters for transmitted light microscopy; lamp centration and alignment of microscope; contrast-fluorescence condensers; photomicrography; and choice of microscope. The culture of viruses for production of antiserum is fully covered. The selection of cell lines or tissues for virus culture is discussed in detail. The text describes in depth the fluorescent antibody staining techniques. The preparation of specimens from respiratory infections is presented completely. A chapter is devoted to the respiratory syncytial virus. Another section focuses on the analysis influenza virus, paramyxoviruses, and picornaviruses. The book can provide useful information to doctors, virologists, students, and researchers.

Download or read book The 15th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering written by James Goh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the processing of the 15th ICMBE held from 4th to 7th December 2013, Singapore. Biomedical engineering is applied in most aspects of our healthcare ecosystem. From electronic health records to diagnostic tools to therapeutic, rehabilitative and regenerative treatments, the work of biomedical engineers is evident. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and healthcare. The engineers would use principles from applied science including mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering together with physical sciences including physics, chemistry and mathematics to apply them to biology and medicine. Applying such concepts to the human body is very much the same concepts that go into building and programming a machine. The goal is to better understand, replace or fix a target system to ultimately improve the quality of healthcare. With this understanding, the conference proceedings offer a single platform for individuals and organizations working in the biomedical engineering related field to gather and network with each other in so doing create the catalyst for future development of biomedical engineering in Asia.

This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 2355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th On behalf of the organizing committee of the 13 International Conference on Biomedical Engineering, I extend our w- mest welcome to you. This series of conference began in 1983 and is jointly organized by the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore). First of all, I want to thank Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman A*STAR who kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour to give th the Opening Address amidst his busy schedule. I am delighted to report that the 13 ICBME has more than 600 participants from 40 countries. We have received very high quality papers and inevitably we had to turndown some papers. We have invited very prominent speakers and each one is an authority in their field of expertise. I am grateful to each one of them for setting aside their valuable time to participate in this conference. For the first time, the Biomedical Engineering Society (USA) will be sponsoring two symposia, ie “Drug Delivery S- tems” and “Systems Biology and Computational Bioengineering”. I am thankful to Prof Tom Skalak for his leadership in this initiative. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Prof Takami Yamaguchi for organizing the NUS-Tohoku’s Global COE workshop within this conference. Thanks also to Prof Fritz Bodem for organizing the symposium, “Space Flight Bioengineering”. This year’s conference proceedings will be published by Springer as an IFMBE Proceedings Series.
