Book Democracy and Assimilation

Download or read book Democracy and Assimilation written by Julius Drachsler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Assimilation: The Blending of Immigrant Heritages in America A detailed discussion of the statistical basis of this book and an appendix giving the source material in full, are contained in a monograph entitled Intermarriage in New York City, A Statistical Study of the Amalgamation of European Peoples, to be published in the Columbia University Studies of History, Economics and Public Law. The data, drawn from more than 100,000 marriage certificates, cover a five-year period (1908-1912) before the European War. The monograph is a companion volume to this book which attempts to supplement the purely objective study of some of the facts of ethnic fusion by an interpretation of their larger bearing upon public policies of assimilation. My sincere thanks are due to Professor A. A. Tenney and Professor R. E. Chaddock of Columbia University for the unfailing aid and counsel they gave while the book was in preparation. I also wish to acknowledge my great indebtedness to Dr. Philip Klein, Director of the Bureau of Education and Research, Southern Division of the American Red Cross, whose critical comments helped to clarify passages, and to my brother, Mr. Leo Drachsler, whose ceaseless help in the analysis of the original marriage records, in the construction of the statistical tables and in the gathering of much descriptive data, proved to be invaluable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Race of America The next object of antiquarian interest, in my descent, was at Gallipolis -the site of an original French settlement on the west bank, which is connected with a story of much interest, in the history of western migrations. It, IS an elevated and eligible plain, which had before been the site of an Indian or aboriginal settlement. Some of the articles found in a mound, such as plates of mica and sea shells, and heads of the wrought conch, indicated the same remote period for this ancient settlement, as the one at Grave Creek Flats; 'but I never heard of any inscribed articles, or monuments bearing alphabetic characters. Book With Poor Immigrants to America Classic Reprint

Download or read book With Poor Immigrants to America Classic Reprint written by Stephen Graham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Poor Immigrants to America Dressed, well housed, comfortable. America is raging against drink, against the exploitation of immigrants, against the fate of the white slave, against any one who has done anything immoral. It will nationally expel a Russian genius like Gorky. It makes great difficulty of admitting to its shores any one who has ever been in prison. It is so in earnest about the future of America that it has set up what is almost an insult to Europe - the ex amination of Ellis Island. Any one who has gone through the ordeal of the poor emigrant, as I did, going into America with a party of poor Russians in the steerage, and has been medically examined and clerically cross-questioned about his life and ethics, knows that America is a materialist and pro gressive country, and that she is no longer a harbour of. Refuge for the weak, but a place where a nation is determined to have health and strength and prosperity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American in the Making: The Life Story of an Immigrant The average American, when he thinks of im migrants at all, thinks, I am afraid, of something rather comical. He thinks of bundles - funny, pictu resque bundles of every shape and size and color. The alien himself, in his incredible garb, as he walks off the gang-plank, appears like some sort of an odd, moving bundle. And always he carries more bundles. Later on, in his peculiar, transplanted life, he sells nondescript merchandise in fantastic vehicles, does violence to the American's language, and sits down on the curb to eat fragrant cheese and unimaginable sausages. He is, for certain, a character fit for a farce. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
