Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of authoritarian rule in 1998 ushered in an exhilarating but unsettled period of democratization in Indonesia. A more open political climate converged with a rapidly changing media landscape, yielding a vibrant and volatile public sphere within which Indonesians grappled with the possibilities and limits of democracy amid entrenched corruption, state violence, and rising forms of intolerance. In Demanding Images Karen Strassler theorizes image-events as political processes in which publicly circulating images become the material ground of struggles over the nation's past, present, and future. Considering photographs, posters, contemporary art, graffiti, selfies, memes, and other visual media, she argues that people increasingly engage with politics through acts of making, circulating, manipulating, and scrutinizing images. Demanding Images is both a closely observed account of Indonesia's turbulent democratic transition and a globally salient analysis of the work of images in the era of digital media and neoliberal democracy. Strassler reveals politics today to be an unruly enterprise profoundly shaped by the affective and evidentiary force of images.

Book Pictures from the other Side

Download or read book Pictures from the other Side written by Kaspar Eduard Schech and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book, Pictures from the other Side, has a double meaning: The 'other side' in this context means a view of Jakarta and Indonesia from the viewpoint of an outsider, a foreigner. The title page illustrates this 'other side' with a wide street cutting through the city with the curious face of a child on the opposite side. The second meaning of 'other side' comes from the purpose of this book which I put together with my friends in Europe in mind. The book shows Jakarta as it is. However, I have not deliberately searched for the ugly corners, I have set out to illustrate my world as it appears to me. Without question, Indonesia has many beautiful sides which are worth to be captured in images and shown to the world - and there are other books which do this very well. This is my personal view in black and white photography.

  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Images of the Tropics written by Susie Protschky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of the Tropics critically examines Dutch colonial culture in the Netherlands Indies through the prism of landscape art. Susie Protschky contends that visual representations of nature and landscape were core elements of how Europeans understood the tropics, justified their territorial claims in the region, and understood their place both in imperial Europe and in colonized Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her book thus makes a significant contribution to studies of empire, art and environment, as well as to histories of Indonesia and Europe.

  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Spices written by Joanna Hall Brierley and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the spice trade of the East Indies have long held the imagination. Cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and cinnamon - indigenous to only 15 of the 13,000 islands forming the Indonesian archipelago - were to bring to the Indies a trade that existed for over 2,000 years, and were to change the course of history as nations battled for control of these precious commodities for use as preservatives, flavourings, fumigants, medicines, and perfumes. Carried by outrigger canoes to the East African coast and by camels along the Silk Road from China in the first and second centuries BC, spices led to the rise of the powerful maritime kingdoms of Srivijaya and Majapahit in the archipelago and, in the sixteenth century onwards, to the establishment of trading monopolies and colonial empires as first the Portuguese, followed by the Spanish, Dutch, and English, broke into the lucrative spice trade.

Comparison of the memories in the three countries brings out the national patterns of memory. Book Indonesia in the Soeharto Years

Download or read book Indonesia in the Soeharto Years written by John H. McGlynn and published by Brill. This book was released on 2007 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During much of Soeharto's thirty-two years of reign as president (1967-1998) Indonesia was seen as a successful test-case in third-world development, a wayward pariah turned into a shining example of modern economic planning and democracy. His New Order government won awards from the United Nations for the country's advances in family planning. The nation's massive development plans won the applause of the World Bank and international financiers. In fact, behind the New Order's benign facade was an intricate web of nepotism, corruption and a persistent and wide-ranging repression of civil liberties, the full scope of which is now just beginning to become apparent." "Indonesia in the Soeharto Years delves into many of the issues and incidents that shaped the nation, from the grim years of 1965 and 1966, up until the nation's first direct election for the president in 2004." "Photographs by many of the nation's top photojournalists and essays by economists, government leaders, journalists, activist and scholars provide unique insights into the politics, culture and history of Indonesia under the New Order." "With the more than fifty short essays, eighty photographic series and extended captions, and 500 historical photographs, this book is an essential document for anyone interested in the politics and culture of modern Indonesia. It is also a publishing milestone; with the work of 125 photographers under one cover, it offers the first-ever comprehensive pictorial look at contemporary Indonesian history."--BOOK JACKET.
