Download or read book Annie Glover is NOT a Tree Lover written by Darleen Bailey Beard and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Glover's grandma is always protesting something, but she goes too far when she chains herself to a century-old tree and names it Elmer. Elmer is scheduled to be cut down to make way for a new swimming-pool complex and Grandma is trying to save him, but Annie wants that swimming pool—and so do all her classmates. Now she must endure all the other fourth graders asking her embarrassing questions and that pesky Leroy Kirk calling her a "tree lover." However, as Annie considers what Elmer means to her town and to herself, she begins to think that maybe Grandma's not so crazy after all. Adorable illustrations perfectly capture Annie's scheme to save Elmer—with the help of her teacher, her best friend, a zany trio of parachuting Elvis impersonators, and, yes, even Grandma.
Download or read book Kilroy written by Wesley Hall and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-05-22 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kilroy, Home from the War is a true story about an ex-U. S. Navy sailor returning to a small town in Oklahoma at the end of World War II. After three years out of circulation, most of it aboard a wooden subchaser participating in island invasions, Wesley Hall returned to a small town in Oklahoma to find that almost everything he could think of was free for the asking. He had gone overseas at the age of seventeen, having never dated a girl or driven an automobile; and suddenly he was home a war hero at the age of twenty. The home folks were so grateful to returning veterans he found it extremely difficult to pay for anything, and to go someplace all he had to do was stick out his thumb. However, picking up where he had left off was complicated by the fact that he couldn't remember much about what it was like to be a civilian. He still had no bad habits, such as drinking and smoking, and he was paralyzed at the thought of asking a girl for a date. That all changed quickly after he bought a '35 Ford sedan and named it Kilroy.
Download or read book Family Gems written by Jim Browning; Daniel Curry and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Gems is set in 1976 and 1977. It consists of the written correspondence (including family recipes and small-town newspaper columns) between two middle-aged sisters, Jewell Mattingly Garrett of Buck Creek, Kentucky, and Ruby JaNelle Mattingly Clarkson of Falstaff, Arizona. Through their letters, other characters come alive: their siblings--level-headed and loving brother Garnett Greene Mattingly and drug-and-alcohol-addicted, widowed sister Opal Ovada Mattingly Skaggs; their spouses, children, grandchildren, and other extended family members. Many other eccentric characters from the community of Buck Creek, Kentucky also appear such as Teensie and Weensie Bottoms, fraternal twin sisters who co-own and operate the local beauty salon, along with Mr. Jerry Combs, a cross-dressing, homosexual hair dresser who rents a booth in the shop. During the course of their correspondence, a lifetime of family secrets--including one son's coming out and one daughter's interracial romance and unplanned pregnancy--are revealed and reviewed, always with compassion and with humor, both warmhearted and wicked.

This book was released on 2024-01-27 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Sally Friday. I started school when I was six-years-old. I went to kindergarten through fifth grade at Booker Elementary and while I was there, I won an award for perfect attendance. I also won an award for honor roll all four terms. Then I attended Booker Middle School, and there I also won a couple of awards: one for perfect attendance and two for being named Student of the Year--one in sixth grade and the other in eighth grade. I am now a senior at Booker High School. I plan on finishing school and maybe going to a community college. Life to me means friends and family who you can trust and who trusts you. I am pretty much on the happy side of life, but like all teens I do I have my "days of." That means I do have some sad days or depressed days. I have a few friends here that sort of look out for me and when I am having a bad day, I have someone here at school to talk to. I make my school days go by thinking of either the next hour or what I will do when I get home or on the weekend. I'm not seeing anyone now but when I did have a boyfriend, our favorite places to go were the movies and out to dinner. Sometimes we went to the beach. Only once we went to an amusement park: Universal Studios. We were together for twenty-nine days and then we brokeup; so no, I don't think it was forever.
