Book ilu whakatauki

Download or read book ilu whakatauki written by Oli Ogbonna and published by OLILEANYA OGBONNA. This book was released on 2021-05-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This piece is done as part of my quest to train our kids to appreciate the right values using elements in diverse cultures particularly those of my parents (Igbo) and those of tangata whenua (Maori) - the land where we now reside. Parents have a role to train their children. This involves inculcating certain values in the children. Language is a basic tool for communicating concepts and thoughts. Different elements are available in the use of language irrespective of nativity. Proverbs referred to in Te reo as ‘whakatauki’ and in Igbo language as ‘ilu’ are a well-used tool to pass on information. The Igbos have a statement that “Ilu bu mmanu eji eri okwu”. That statement means that proverbs are the sauce used to consume / eat words or discourse. The proverb is set in the context of food (kai) and feeding. While children can be said to learn better with visual communication of the message being passed across, using proverbs helps in passing across an instruction, moral or standard. In this book and the ensuing series, my daughters and I will explore the use of whakatauki, as well as ilu to describe situations and proffer solutions and suggestions. We will look at various whakatauki (ilu / proverbs) and seek to use experiences that children will find easy to identify with.

Book Olelo No eau

Book excerpt: "This extraordinary collection of Hawaiian sayings--collected, translated, and annotated by Mary Kawena Pukui--offers a unique opportunity to savor the wisdom, poetic beauty, and earthy humor of these finely crafted expressions. The sayings may be appreciated individually and collectively for their aesthetic, historic, and educational values. They reveal even deeper layers of meaning, giving understanding not only of Hawaii and its people but all of humanity. Since the sayings carry the immediacy of the spoken word, considered to be the highest form of cultural expression in old Hawaii, they bring us closer to the everyday thoughts and lives of the Hawaiians who created them. Taken together, the sayings offer a basis for an understanding of the essence and origins of traditional Hawaiian values." -- Amazon.com viewed August 3, 2020.

Book excerpt: Pearls of wisdom contained in proverbs - whakatauk-I - have been gifted from generation to generation as an intrinsic part of the M-aori world. As powerful metaphors, they combine analogy and cultural history in the most economical of words. Short and insightful, they surprise, engendering reflection, learning and personal growth. Mauri Ora links whakatauk-I to key personal virtues idealised across cultures and generations. The virtues - wisdom, courage, compassion, integrity, self-mastery and belief - stem from the science of positive psychology; the study of how to live a better life. Illustrated throughout with wonderful photographs from an old world, this book draws on traditional wisdom to provide a recipe for personal effectiveness and leadership, and a rewarding connection of M-aori knowledge to contemporary thinking about personal happiness and fulfilment.

To the British it was the means by which they gained sovereignty over New Zealand. But to Maori people it had a very different significance, and they are still affected by the terms of the Treaty, often adversely. The Treaty of Waitangi, the first comprehensive study of the Treaty, deals with its place in New Zealand history from its making to the present day. The story covers the several Treaty signings and the substantial differences between Maori and English texts; the debate over interpretation of land rights and the actions of settler governments determined to circumvent Treaty guarantees; the wars of sovereignty in the 1860s and the longstanding Maori struggle to secure a degree of autonomy and control over resources." --Publisher.
