Book Encyclopaedia of Biography of Connecticut

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Biography of Connecticut written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Encyclopaedia of Biography of Connecticut: Illustrated With Portraits Engraved on Steel In the number and diversity of its industries Connecticut, to-day, stands unrivalled among her sister states. The genius of its inventors and the skill of its artisans are known throughout the entire world. In open competition with their brethren of older communities-notably those of the northern country and other leading European nations-its merchants have pushed the sale of the varied products of its mills, factories and workshops, into every quarter of the globe. Viewing education as the handmaid of religion, the people of Connecticut have generously fostered its public schools and academies and can boast that illiteracy is almost unknown and crime at a minimum. The colleges in the state are all noteworthy institutions; while the oldest, Yale, has a fame for scholarship as broad as the earth. As patriots the people of Connecticut have a proud record; and the bravery and devotion of the men who labored and fought for the preservation of the Union fitly supplement the heroism and sacrifices of those who struggled so nobly and successfully to establish its independence. In statecraft and in letters the sons of Connecticut have achieved signal renown; in the realm of professional labor and in that of humane as well as religious endeavor likewise, they have won eminent distinction. Book A History of Connecticut

Download or read book A History of Connecticut written by George L. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Connecticut: Its People and Institutions; With 100 Illustrations and Maps While Connecticut is passing from foundation work and a style of living, moulded by the frugal Puritan influences of the early years, into conditions, shaped largely by people from many other lands; while wealth, luxuries and amusements multiply, it is well to review the past, study the reasons for the migrations hither; glance at early idealism, hardships and problems; see the thrift, wariness and common sense; observe what farmers had for breakfast, what and how they believed, the way they worked, struggled and occasionally played; how fines as well as interest in a warm theology promoted attendance at the icy meeting-house. It is diverting to notice leather breeches, home-spun coats and linsey-woolsey gowns issuing from forest, sheep-pasture and flax-field; watch the evolution of the log-house into the gambrel-roofed and lean-to; see the bridle-path widen and harden into turnpike, railroad and trolley; schooner change to steamboat and ferry to bridge; mark how the versatile people managed with Indians, wolves, rattlesnakes, witchcraft, slavery, tramps and Sunday; how they erected schools, meeting-houses, whipping-posts and pillories in every town; how they relieved the monotony of brewing beer, working the loom and hoeing corn by a journey to Tower Hill to enjoy the luxury of a moving picture of a public hanging. Book Hartford Connecticut s Capital

Download or read book Hartford Connecticut s Capital written by Glenn Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of Hartford is directly attributable to a problem -- bothersome but undramatic -- in Massachusetts. It was only about a decade after the Pilgrims' landing at Plymouth Rock, but the residents of Newtown (now Cambridge) were beginning to feel crowded in their little village on the Charles River. As a further irritant, theological differences were straining relations between one of Newtown's leaders, the Reverend Thomas Hooker, and the Reverend John Cotton of the Boston Church. A separation was inevitable. After the Massachusetts General Court granted the Newtown inhabitants permission "to seek out some more convenient place," they chose a site in the Connecticut River Valley, at a place the Indians called Sukiag. In 1635 the first handful of settlers arrived, and Hartford became the latest outpost of British civilization.
