Book excerpt: Since the Oriental Ceramic Society was established in 1921 it has organised a number of exhibitions which have comprised, wholly or in part, material from the collections of its members. Coming into the 21st century, the Society decided to stage a series of exhibitions taking as their these the decorative techniques applied to Asian ceramics. The first of these exhibitions was held in 2003 and was shown in three venues--in London, Bath and Glasgow. This exhibition tackled the subject of underglaze cobalt blue decoration and was called The World in Blue and White. The second in the series was held in 2006 and examined ceramics with polychrome decoration, whether applied directly to the unfired ceramic body or slip, or applied over an already fired glaze. This exhibition was called The World in Colours, and, like the current exhibition was held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in their Brunei Gallery.--preface.

This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zheng He’s Maritime Voyages (1405-1433) and China’s Relations with the Indian Ocean World: A Multilingual Bibliography provides a multidisciplinary guide to publications on this great navigator’s activities and their impact on Chinese and world history. Admiral Zheng He commanded the fifteenth-century world’s largest fleet. In the course of seven voyages made between 1405 and 1433, his massive ships visited over thirty present-day countries in Asia and Africa. Those voyages reflected and reinforced the development of complex networks of trade, migration, cultural exchange, and political interactions between China and the Indian Ocean world. This bibliography lists sources in thirteen languages, including both scholarly studies and popular works like Gavin Menzies’s controversial bestsellers claiming the Chinese sailed around the world before Columbus. Relevant translations, transliterations and annotations are provided to aid the reader.
Download or read book Issues of Authenticity in Chinese Painting written by Judith G. Smith and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1999 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with a December 1999 symposium held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and an exhibition, "The Artist as Collector: Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from the C.C. Wang Family Collection." Twelve contributions give dissenting opinions regarding a book recently published by The Museum titled Along the Riverbank, which seeks to attribute the painting called "Riverbank" to the 10th-century landscape master Dong Yuan--an attribution that would call for the rewriting of early Chinese painting history. This volume contains 239 bandw illustrations to support the contributors' efforts to explain their opinions. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: The Copeland Collection of 134 Chinese and Japanese ceramic figures, perhaps the most important assemblage of its kind still in private hands, is recognized internationally for the superb quality of its many rare forms. Acquired by Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland over the past fifty years, each of these beautifully modeled human and animal figures testifies to the unerring eye of a premiere collector. The majority of these figures are of porcelain, produced during the late seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries, principally for export to the West. Each individual piece displays the meticulous artistry, the marvelous enameling, and the animation and wit characteristic of this remarkably innovative period in ceramic history However modest in scale, many are important works of art.--Amazon.com.
