Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case of Armenia The Sultan, following his admission into the fraternity of the civilized nations, resumed with even a fuller vigor his congenial trade of murder and destruction. He massacred Maronites and Nestorians, through the Druses; 30, 000 Bulgarians, through his soldiers; laid a heavy hand on Bosnia and Herzegovina; plundered and massacred, through the Kurds, the Circassians and his Zaptiehs, the defenseless and peaceful Armenians of the rural districts; and through his chosen officials and military tyrants, inaugurated, in the principal Armenian centres, an era of unprecedented oppression and persecution. The russo-turkish war of 1877 was the direct outcome of this state of things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia's Ordeal: A Sketch of the Main Features of the History of Armenia; An Inside Account of the Work of American Missionaries Among Armenians, and Its Ruinous Effect; And a General Review of the Armenian Question The name of Truth is applauded by all, but Truth it self is very disagreeable and unwelcome to many. Know ing this, I have resolved to cling fast to the truth, to say nothing but the truth, and to say a good deal of the truth that I know in relation to my subject, unmindful of its consequences. The Turkish proverb says He that will speak truth shall have a hole in his head. It is risky sometimes to speak truth. But what do I risk except myself and what am I in comparison with the sacred cause for which I come forth to speak Q The sa cred cause of my martyred nation demands of me to speak out, and to speak the truth for the best interests and the only hope of my people lie in the revelation of the truth. Therefore I must speak the truth at all hazards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenian Poems: Rendered Into English Verse The first was the conviction that the sym pathy already felt for the Armenians in their martyrdom at the hands of the Turks would be deepened by an acquaintance with the temper and genius of the people, as shown in their poetry. The second was the fact that Armenian poetic liter ature, while well worthy to be known, was practically inaccessible to English-speaking readers. Of the sixty poems in this book, only two. So far as I can learn, have ever been put into English verse. The majority have never been translated, either in verse or prose. No attempt has been made to imitate the Armenian metres. The aim has been to reproduce the meaning of the original as accurately as possible, in the simplest English forms. Book Armenian Legends and Festivals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Armenian Legends and Festivals Classic Reprint written by Louis A. Boettiger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenian Legends and Festivals It must, therefore, be evident that neither Part One on legends, nor Part Two on festivals, is exhaustive, and this is necessarily so, not only because of my selective plan, but also because much of the work on this and kindred subjects has been done by the French, and is available only on the continent. All of the sources used are, however, original in two possible constructions of the term; that is, they are the works of Armenians who have lived for many years in their native land, or of foreigners, generally French or English, who have traveled through the country and gathered their material first hand. A large portion of this matter I have been able to check up and add to through my wife, an Armenian, who lived in Constantinople most of her life, and who is naturally versed in the folk-lore of her native land. While this has been the chief source of my interest, it is not the only one, for during my three years' work in Beirut, Syria, I became acquainted with many Armenians. Book The Armenians of Aintab

  • Author : †mit Kurt
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-13
  • ISBN : 0674247949

Download or read book The Armenians of Aintab written by †mit Kurt and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A TurkÕs discovery that Armenians once thrived in his hometown leads to a groundbreaking investigation into the local dynamics of genocide. †mit Kurt, born and raised in Gaziantep, Turkey, was astonished to learn that his hometown once had a large and active Armenian community. The Armenian presence in Aintab, the cityÕs name during the Ottoman period, had not only been destroyedÑit had been replaced. To every appearance, Gaziantep was a typical Turkish city. Kurt digs into the details of the Armenian dispossession that produced the homogeneously Turkish city in which he grew up. In particular, he examines the population that gained from ethnic cleansing. Records of land confiscation and population transfer demonstrate just how much new wealth became available when the prosperous ArmeniansÑwho were active in manufacturing, agricultural production, and tradeÑwere ejected. Although the official rationale for the removal of the Armenians was that the group posed a threat of rebellion, Kurt shows that the prospect of material gain was a key motivator of support for the Armenian genocide among the local Muslim gentry and the Turkish public. Those who benefited mostÑprovincial elites, wealthy landowners, state officials, and merchants who accumulated Armenian capitalÑin turn financed the nationalist movement that brought the modern Turkish republic into being. The economic elite of Aintab was thus reconstituted along both ethnic and political lines. The Armenians of Aintab draws on primary sources from Armenian, Ottoman, Turkish, British, and French archives, as well as memoirs, personal papers, oral accounts, and newly discovered property-liquidation records. Together they provide an invaluable account of genocide at ground level.
