Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Illinois Studies in the Social Sciences, 1914, Vol. 3 This study found its inception in the seminar of Dean David Kinley, of the University Of Illinois, during the winter Of 1908-1909. The seminar that year devoted its attention to the subject of taxation in the state in antici patiou of the movement for the revision of the tax system which culminatedoin the appointment of the special tax commission of 1910. Considerable material, gathered by the members of the seminar, dealing particularly with the present day situation, has been made available for this undertaking; and acknowledgment is made in this special manner to Dr. A. E. Swanson, Dr. E. J. Brown, Mr. T. E. Latimer and Mr. J. R. Moore for the assistance afforded by their seminar studies. Moreover, material on various phases of the subject gathered by Professor M. B. Ham mond, of the Ohio State University, and by Professor Na than A. Weston, of the University of Illinois, was also very kindly contributed by them and was Of no slight aid in the work. For this generous cooperation I desire to render my thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Illinois Studies in the Social Sciences, Vol. 9: Published Quarterly by the University of Illinois The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America 1 The language here used by the Constitution in describing the executive power in the govern ment of the United States is strikingly difierent from that describing the general power of either of the other two great de partments. The article dealing with the legislative department uses the words, All legislative powers herein granted '2 showing that the following specified powers clearly constitute a limitation on the possible claims of that department to power; while the article devoted to the judiciary also expressly states that the judicial power of the United States shall extend to certain enumerated cases,3 thereby obviously excluding all other cases over which the judiciary might otherwise claim jurisdiction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Illinois Studies in the Social Sciences, Vol. 10: March, 1922 The present study is an attempt to add something of value and interest to the understanding of the nature, causes, and extent, as well as the evidences and influence of monarchical tendencies in the United States from 1776 to 1801. Many writers have touched upon the subject. Some have disposed of it with a few sweeping generalizations; others have given considerable space to certain of the more striking manifestations of monarchical tendencies. I have prepared a study which presents, so far as I know them, all the more important data on which justifiable generalizations can be based. By its relative completeness and by its arrangement of the facts, for the most part, in chronological order, this study should afford an account somewhat clearer and more comprehensive than those attempted in preceding treatments. Foremost among numerous persons to whom I am indebted for valuable criticism and suggestions are Professor Theodore C. Pease and Professor Evarts B. Greene, of the University of Illinois. The latter assisted in an advisory capacity from the very outset of the work. Any errors in respect to fact or treatment are, of course, entirely my own.
