Book Engagement in Teaching History

Download or read book Engagement in Teaching History written by Frederick D. Drake and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can history be taught effectively? Does knowing about the past give meaning to the present and hints to what will happen in the future? This book responds to these questions as it explores the key elements of history instruction-the use of primary sources and narratives, involving students in the historical inquiry through classroom discussions, teaching toward chronological thinking, and the use of historical documents to develop in students a "detective approach" to solving historical problems. Taking a systematic approach to improve students' historical thinking, this book emphasizes certain strategies that will help students know more about the past in ways that will help them in their lives today. The second edition is organized in three parts-Part One describes the theoretical background to teaching history. Part Two, "Planning and Assessment," emphasizes the importance of good organization and lesson planning as well as how to assess students' knowledge, reasoning power, and effective use of communication in the history classroom. Part Three, "Instruction," focuses on the use of primary sources, class discussions, incorporating photographs and paintings, and writing in teaching history. Both the study of history and the teaching of history are multifaceted. The author's hope in writing this book is to engage new and experienced teachers in thoughtful discourse regarding the teaching and learning of history and to develop lifelong learners of history in the 21st century.

Book History Education 101

Download or read book History Education 101 written by Wilson J. Warren and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians and teacher educators nationwide are now engaged in discussions about the importance of history teacher preparation. Interest within the history profession about the teaching of K-12 history has increased significantly during the past two decades, particularly since the controversy over the National Standards for History’s publication. This attention is evident not only in the historical professions’ various publications, but also in the federal government’s multi-million dollar Teaching American History Program and the No Child Left Behind Act. Professional historians are increasingly committed to improving the teaching of history at the K-12 level through many forms of collaboration. History Education 101’s thirteen essays are organized into three sections: context, practice, and new directions. The essays’ contributors, tenured faculty who teach history teaching methods courses in colleges and universities throughout the United States, focus on how history education has, is, and will be taught to new K-12 teachers throughout the United States. Perhaps more than ever, it is critical for Americans to understand the role of higher education in the preparation of future middle and high school history teachers. This book provides important insights for academics in history and education departments as well as other individuals who are concerned with the status and improvement of history teaching in the schools, particularly current and future elementary and secondary teachers and administrators.

Book Educational History of Illinois

Download or read book Educational History of Illinois written by John Williston Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational History of Illinois: Growth and Progress in Educational Affairs of the State, From the Earliest Day to the Present, With Portraits and Biographies The great educational agency, in the sense in which we are considering education, is the school. Improvement in education has been accomplished mainly through the improvement of the school. The history of education, therefore, will be chie y the history of the growth of the school. In the following pages an attempt will be made to trace its development in the Illinois country from the early territorial days to the present, when the! Ancient Wilderness has become a populous empire. Where a century ago were only the Creatures Of the wild are now the seats of the mighty, palaces, temples, hives of industry and vast market places, all crowding upon each other for Standing room. This is not the place for anything approaching an exhaustive historical survey. Our task is far less pretentious than that. Illinois has a history abounding in events that exhibit all of the charm of romance. But it is to the school that we are chie y to confine our attention. We are the Children of the past, however, and to under stand ourselves and our civilization we must know something of the conditions out of Which our social and economic life developed.
