Book Europe meets Formosa 1510 1662

Download or read book Europe meets Formosa 1510 1662 written by Paul Kua and published by Propius Press. This book was released on 2024-03-20 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains two parts, each covering some aspects of East-West encounters on Formosa, better known today to many as Taiwan. Part I investigates Portuguese “discovery” and “naming” of the island as Formosa, in the context of conflicting claims and recent scholarly debates in Taiwan which challenged the conventional wisdom on this matter. Part II deals with Dutch efforts to educate and convert native Formosans, examining motives of the coloniser for pursuing this “civilising” project, identities of the colonised such as race (tribal village), age, gender, language, and faith which had influenced school policies, and responses of the tribes ranging from partnerships to conflicts. The two studies reconstruct historical events in the 16th and 17th centuries, drawing on many primary sources. But, as shall be shown, Portuguese “naming” of the island and Dutch “civilising” of its indigenes both retain some relevance for the Aboriginal minority and the Chinese majority in Taiwan to this day, hundreds of years later.

Book Crossing Between Tradition and Modernity Essays in Commemoriation of Milena Dole alov Velingerov 1932 2012

Download or read book Crossing Between Tradition and Modernity Essays in Commemoriation of Milena Dole alov Velingerov 1932 2012 written by Kirk A. Denton and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Eseje jsou strukturovány do dvou částí Language, Structure, and Genre a Identities and Self-Representations. Jsou motivovány soustředěným zájmem o problematiku jazyka, narativní struktury a komplexní povahy literárního významu, tématy, které byly středobodem práce Mileny Doleželové-Velingerové.

Book Rays of the Searching Sun

Download or read book Rays of the Searching Sun written by Lisa Lai-Ming Wong and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yang Mu, the recipient of the 2007 International Prize for Literature Written in Chinese, is a well-known bicultural poet. Born in Taiwan during the last phase of the Japanese occupation, his life and writing have been influenced by competing forces in the historical, political, intellectual, linguistic, and aesthetic realms. Yang Mu's humanist sensibility has offered critical insights into the dangers of binary opposition and ideological thinking. His poetry has appealed to readers worldwide and is accessible in English, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Japanese, and Korean translations. This study of Yang Mu's poetics examines the writer's literary choices from a cross-cultural perspective, highlighting the relationship between issues of international concern and modern cultural theories. Yang Mu's dialogic lyric voice engages peoples from different eras and cultures. This is achieved by addressing contemporary crises between nations or by responding to philosophical questions about identity, memory, and time. Yang Mu's works exhibit a true transcultural outlook that will significantly contribute to the development of 21st century world poetry.

  • Author : John F Copper
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-05-04
  • ISBN : 0429974221
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Taiwan written by John F Copper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this newly revised and updated edition of Taiwan: Nation-State or Province?, John F. Copper examines Taiwan's geography and history, society and culture, economy, political system, and foreign and security policies in the context of Taiwan's uncertain political status as either a sovereign nation or a province of the People's Republic of China. Copper argues that Taiwan's very rapid and successful democratization suggests Taiwan should be independent and separate from China, while economic links between Taiwan and China indicate the opposite. New to the sixth edition is enhanced coverage of the issues of immigration; the impact of having the world's lowest birthrate; China's economic and military rise and America's decline; Taiwan's relations with China, the United States, and Japan; and the KMT's (Nationalist Party) return to power. The new edition will also examine the implications of the 2012 presidential election. A selected bibliography guides students in further research.

Book Between Civic and Ethnic

Download or read book Between Civic and Ethnic written by Xiaokun Song and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a descriptive analysis of elitist nationalist ideologies in Taiwan, this study challenges the traditional Western distinction between civic nationalism and ethnic nationalism. Instead, this discussion contends that the fluid historical context must always be taken into account. An overview of nationalist unrest in Taiwan over a century includes Japanese colonization (1895–1945), four decades of martial law (1945–1985), and afterwards (1986–2000).

Book The A to Z of Taiwan Republic of China

Download or read book The A to Z of Taiwan Republic of China written by John Franklin Copper and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan, an island located off the east coast of southern China, is the largest piece of territory under the jurisdiction of the "nation" known officially as the Republic of China. Constant debate over whether Taiwan is its own sovereign state, part of the Republic of China, or part of the People's Republic of China has been going on for years. With Chinese leaders in the People's Republic of China rejecting Taiwan's legal separation and vowing that they will resolve the "Taiwan issue" by military force if necessary and most citizens of Taiwan opposing unification with China in the short run, it would appear that Taiwan faces some tough decisions ahead. The A to Z of Taiwan (Republic of China) offers insight into Taiwan's situation through a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a map, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important people, places, events, political parties, and institutions, as well as major political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of this island country. Whether or not Taiwan joins the People's Republic of China or gains its independence, Taiwan's outcome is of the utmost importance, and this reference provides the necessary information to understand its state of affairs.
