This collection of records on restoration proposed by scholars, academics, and professionals active in various geo-cultural contexts, aims at offering interpretation keys to different approaches to the conservation of architectural heritage in the international context, and not a complete framework of “conservation in the world”, which is evidently too complex and vast to be summarized in few pages.

Book excerpt: Nella complessità del dibattito contemporaneo sul restauro, uno dei modi per favorire l’avanzamento della ricerca sembra possa essere quello del confronto diretto e aperto tra diversi interlocutori, in cui porre sul tappeto della discussione i nodi problematici con cui il settore disciplinare attualmente si confronta. E, attraverso queste esperienze, provare a circoscrivere i problemi e a definirne i contorni, a focalizzare gli elementi di divergenza e gli assunti comuni, a chiarire con linearità quale si crede debbano essere le finalità, i metodi, gli strumenti, i limiti del progetto di conservazione, cercando di prefigurare scenari diversi. In questo caso, dall’apporto delle alte competenze degli intervistati emerge la volontà di cercare una specificità della disciplina collettiva ed affermata, premessa per definire una politica comune capace di interagire in modo più incisivo nel mondo attuale. Oltre che sulle problematiche relative ai fondamenti teorici, si legge una ricerca di condivisione di vedute anche sulle problematiche concrete, nella volontà di trovare soluzioni possibili, reali ed efficaci alle singole questioni. Tra queste: la distanza tra elaborazione teorica e professionalità, la diffusione coordinata delle conoscenze e dei risultati delle ricerche, il ruolo e le difficoltà dell’architetto restauratore, la formazione universitaria e quella che riguarda gli altri ambiti professionali coinvolti nella disciplina, le questioni economiche e politiche legate alla tutela. Temi in cui le diversità di vedute che certo permangono, costituiscono di fatto una ricchezza data dalla pluralità di sensibilità ed esperienze. Chiara Lumia (Palermo 1964) architetto, ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Conservazione dei Beni Architettonici e Ambientali presso il Dipartimento PAU dell’Università di Reggio Calabria. Dopo avere collaborato ai corsi di Restauro architettonico della Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo e di Reggio Calabria, attualmente è docente a contratto della cattedra di Laboratorio di restauro dei monumenti e di Orientamento contemporaneo delle teorie del restauro presso l’ateneo di Palermo; dal 2001 è docente nel curriculum in Conservazione e Restauro della SUPSI di Lugano, dove tiene i corsi di Storia delle tecniche realizzative e manutentive, Teorie e storia del restauro e Tematiche del dibattito contemporaneo. È autrice di saggi sulla storia e le teorie del restauro, con riferimento, anche, alle problematiche di conoscenza e di conservazione delle pratiche costruttive siciliane e alla storia della tutela in Canton Ticino.

La vulgata comune di Soprintendenze ed esperti del settore è di limitarsi a conservare e mantenere, senza interventi significativi. Giuseppe Gentili, in questo pregevole saggio, sostiene una tesi diversa, volta a un restauro della sensazione e dell’emozione. Un edificio antico, con tutti i documenti dell’epoca, le planimetrie, può essere restaurato nel suo spazio fisico, nella materia, nella forma, nel colore. Un rudere può essere riportato al suo antico splendore. Un tempio può persino prevedere la ricostruzione del suo tetto. Così, è convinto l’autore, non si produrranno dei falsi storici, ma si permetterà alle persone di avvicinarsi con maggiore consapevolezza al passato, suscitando delle emozioni che non lasceranno indifferenti. Lo stesso discorso vale per il paesaggio storico rurale, che deve essere tutelato e restaurato alla stessa maniera del patrimonio storico-architettonico. Il saggio di Giuseppe Gentili propone diversi esempi di successo restaurativo inerenti al territorio marchigiano, in cui sono stati rispettati l’opera e l’autore, ed è stata data nuova dignità a qualcosa che sarebbe rimasto senza significato. Un libro per tutti i restauratori desiderosi di spingersi oltre nella loro professione e di cambiare mentalità nell’approccio al restauro dei nostri beni. Giuseppe Gentili è nato a Sarnano (MC) nel 1948. Ha conseguito la laurea in Architettura nel 1973, con una tesi sulla riforma sanitaria e architettura ospedaliera. Dal 1974 al 1977 ha partecipato alla progettazione Architettonica dell’Ospedale Generale di Yaounde, in Camerun, di 1200 posti letto, quale dipendente della Società C.O.I.M.A. di Roma. Contemporaneamente, per la stessa società camerunense, ha redatto il progetto di massima dell’Hotel Douala con le sue 1000 stanze, e una lottizzazione a Yaounde su 40 Ha. Nel 1977 ha collaborato alla progettazione di parte dell’area di Porto Cervo, Costa Smeralda in Sardegna, con l’arch. Figus. Dal 1977 al 1980 ha partecipato alla progettazione di nuovi allestimenti e restauro delle agenzie e sedi della Cassa di Risparmio di Calabria e Lucania, con Michele Macina. Nel 1981 si è trasferito da Roma a Sarnano, in provincia di Macerata, dove tuttora risiede e lavora.

Childs argues that Greek art in this era was a natural outgrowth of the high classical period and focused on developing the rudiments of individual expression that became the hallmark of the classical in the fifth century. As Childs shows, in many respects the art of this period corresponds with the philosophical inquiry by Plato and his contemporaries into the nature of art and speaks to the contemporaneous sense of insecurity and renewed religious devotion. Delving into formal and iconographic developments in sculpture and painting, Childs examines how the sensitive, expressive quality of these works seamlessly links the classical and Hellenistic periods, with no appreciable rupture in the continuous exploration of the human condition. Another overarching theme concerns the nature of “style as a concept of expression,” an issue that becomes more important given the increasingly multiple styles and functions of fourth-century Greek art. Childs also shows how the color and form of works suggested the unseen and revealed the profound character of individuals and the physical world.

Barbara Furlotti presents a dynamic interpretation of the early modern market for antiquities, relying on the innovative notion of archaeological finds as mobile items. She reconstructs the journey of ancient objects from digging sites to venues where they were sold, such as Roman marketplaces and antiquarians’ storage spaces; to sculptors’ workshops, where they were restored; and to Italian and other European collections, where they arrived after complicated and costly travel over land and sea. She shifts the attention away from collectors to peasants with shovels, dealers and middlemen, and restorers who unearthed, cleaned up, and repaired or remade objects, recuperating the role these actors played in Rome’s socioeconomic structure. Furlotti also examines the changes in economic value, meaning, and appearance that antiquities underwent as they moved trhoughout their journeys and as they reached the locations in which they were displayed. Drawing on vast unpublished archival material, she offers answers to novel questions: How were antiquities excavated? How and where were they traded? How were laws about the ownership of ancient finds made, followed, and evaded?
