The workshop brought together a number of scholars working in the fields Arabic Studies, Greek and Latin Studies, Septuaginta Studies, and Iranian Studies. The workshop concentrated on the transmission of texts and ideas across language barriers in the Eastern Mediterranean. The main focus was on literary and historical texts, but also scientific, pseudoscientific, and religious texts were discussed. The workshop and the resulting collection of articles shows clearly that there is still much to do in the field of translation studies in the Long Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The various cultures around the Mediterranean have always lived in close contact with each other, and translation of texts has played a central role in the intellectual interaction of these cultures. While parts of this interaction have received scholarly attention, others have been almost neglected. The aim of this volume is to direct attention to the manifold and vivid culture of translation around the Mediterranean.

Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy's attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the 'regional state' of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The thread that runs through all these essays and holds the collection together is translation technique, which is characterized as a central aspect of methodology rather than an object of study. Only by tracing the trail of the Septuagint translators is it possible to gain a reliable picture of the different translators and of the Hebrew Vorlage their work was based on. The themes dealt with in the individual essays range from the study of syntactical features of the Greek language used in the Septuagint to the quest for the correct understanding of the underlying Hebrew, from the overall description of the translation character of certain biblical books to the application of translation technical data in textual criticism of the Hebrew text, and from methodological questions to the discussion of theological interpretation by the translators, reflecting the ongoing discussion in the international field of Septuagint studies and representing a significant and distinctive critical position in it.
