L'affezione reciproca è un sentimento grande, ma al tempo stesso faticoso, come lo è mettere al mondo dei figli ed educarli; come è faticoso far fronte alle necessità economiche del quotidiano, specie alle soglie dell'esperienza coniugale...Ma che cos'è che rende lieve ogni difficoltà e fa del sacramento del matrimonio uno strumento privilegiato e incarnato della salvezza cristiana? Il suo porsi come segno di contraddizione nel contesto del mondo dominato dagli scopi individualisti e intraterreni del potere e del successo, come luogo della fedeltà, della condivisione tra i due, dell'ospitalità e del sacrificio reciproco e verso gli altri. Luogo del riscontro vivo della fede che riconosce e manifesta l'azione salvifica di Cristo nella storia, apportatrice di un destino di amore e felicità eterni, che chiede di essere vissuto e annunciato, con sguardo non alla terra che finisce, ma al cielo che verrà. In definitiva, nella risposta alla vocazione particolare del matrimonio, gli sposi non possono che diventare memoria e missione dell'amore e del sacrificio di Cristo stesso, e la loro comunione costituisce la cellula originaria della Chiesa, corpo mistico di Cristo, prefigurazione storica della comunità dei santi.
