Book I Think You re Totally Wrong

Download or read book I Think You re Totally Wrong written by David Shields and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An impassioned, funny, probing, fiercely inconclusive, nearly-to-the-death debate about life and art—beers included. Caleb Powell always wanted to become an artist, but he overcommitted to life (he’s a stay-at-home dad to three young girls), whereas his former professor David Shields always wanted to become a human being, but he overcommitted to art (he has five books coming out in the next year and a half). Shields and Powell spend four days together at a cabin in the Cascade Mountains, playing chess, shooting hoops, hiking to lakes and an abandoned mine; they rewatch My Dinner with André and The Trip, relax in a hot tub, and talk about everything they can think of in the name of exploring and debating their central question (life and/or art?): marriage, family, sports, sex, happiness, drugs, death, betrayal—and, of course, writers and writing. The relationship—the balance of power—between Shields and Powell is in constant flux, as two egos try to undermine each other, two personalities overlap and collapse. This book seeks to deconstruct the Q&A format, which has roots as deep as Plato and Socrates and as wide as Laurel and Hardy, Beckett’s Didi and Gogo, and Car Talk’s Magliozzi brothers. I Think You’re Totally Wrong also seeks to confound, as much as possible, the divisions between “reality” and “fiction,” between “life” and “art.” There are no teachers or students here, no interviewers or interviewees, no masters in the universe—only a chasm of uncertainty, in a dialogue that remains dazzlingly provocative and entertaining from start to finish. James Franco's adaptation of I Think You're Totally Wrong into a film, with Shields and Powell striving mightily to play themselves and Franco in a supporting role, will be released later this year.

After moving her family to a Maryland plantation, Laine discovers that she can communicate with the house's ghosts - and they tell her a story of slavery, murder, and romance that will change her life forever. A New York Times Best Selling ebook. This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched both readers and reviewers. A true tale of self discovery, ghosts, slavery, murder, family and perseverance, this remarkable story follows 40-something Laine, an ordinary mom, who moves with her family to an 18th century Maryland plantation and wakes up suddenly psychic, and the journey she makes to find herself again. Who knew Laine Crosby, former marketing executive at The Weather Channel, had the gift of being a Psychic Medium? Not even Laine, that is, until she moved from Atlanta to the property of an eighteenth century Maryland plantation and woke up talking to a former slave buried in her backyard! Besides going through culture shock, she soon learned that the property was loaded with spirits, largely from a slave cemetery. When they overheard her tell her kids about spiritual realities, they came calling. Lots of them. Investigative Medium - the Awakening, examines the gift that was thrust upon Laine who was at first surprised, and then upset, and over time and through experience, embracing of this new way of life. Laine's husband, Chris, twins Annie and Caleb, and even her Jack Russell terrier "Steve" have peripheral ghostly involvement, so it is a family affair, although at first an unsettling one. Along Laine's journey, she meets an unlikely friend, the spirit of Jannette, once nanny to the children on the plantation where she lives. Laine finds similarities in her own life and Jannette's, and with Jannette's friendship, Laine begins her journey down a path of self discovery.Jannette has had a similar tussle with racism and sexism from her 19th-century circumstances to Laine's struggle with prejudices against her spiritual abilities. So, the two stories are parallel. With Laine's new abilities, she becomes Jannette's voice, bringing her back from the antebellum South to tell the incredible story of her life as a slave, and a tender romance is revealed. Interwoven with Laine's personal story, are the first hand accounts of former slaves Jannette and Bill, and others. Once Laine accepts her gift, it is her mother who, from beyond the grave, helps Laine find a way to surrender, and at long last give up on the life she dreamed of having, in order to have the life she was meant to live. Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Investigative Medium - the Awakening is funny, thrilling and inspiring. The book examines the gift thrust upon Laine, and her acceptance and eventual surrender to the life she is supposed to live.

Book Heart of Beirut

Download or read book Heart of Beirut written by Samir Khalaf and published by Saqi. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bourj in central Beirut is one of the world's oldest and most vibrant public squares. Named after the mediaeval lookout tower that once soared above the city's imposing ramparts, the square has also been known as Place des Canons (after a Russian artillery build-up in 1773) and Martyrs' Square (after the Ottoman execution of nationalists in 1916). As an open museum of civilizations, it resonates with influences from ancient Phoenician to colonial, post-colonial and, as of late, postmodern elements. Over the centuries it has come to embody pluralism and tolerance. During the Lebanese civil war (1975-90), this ebullient entertainment district, transport hub and melting-pot of cultures was ruptured by the notorious Green Line, which split the city into belligerent warring factions. Fractious infighting and punishing Israeli air raids compounded the damage, turning the Bourj into a no-man's-land. In the wake of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri's assassination (14 February 2005), the Bourj witnessed extraordinary scenes of popular, multi-faith and cross-generational protest. Once again, Samir Khalaf argues, the heart of Beirut was poised to re-invent itself as an open space in which diverse groups can celebrate their differences without indifference to the other. By revisiting earlier episodes in the Bourj's numerous transformations of its collective identity, Khalaf explores prospects for neutralizing the disheartening symptoms of reawakened religiosity and commodified consumerism. 'A timely and informative study on Beirut's pre-eminent patch of public space.' The Daily Star 'Khalaf has arguably contributed more fine studies on the history and sociology of modern Lebanon than has any other scholar alive.' Foreign Affairs 'A spirited guide to Beirut's (re)development, lively in style, rich in illustration and perceptive in analysis.' Frederick Anscombe, Birkbeck College, University of London
