Book A City of One s Own

Download or read book A City of One s Own written by Sophie Body-Gendrot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the citizens' continuous participation in a wide range of urban affairs, especially outside institutional frameworks. It brings together an interdisciplinary team of French, British and American academics who examine the long and rich history of participation or partnership in British and American urban life (with additional reference to France), showing that both private interests and community groups have long been involved in local policies. Utilizing the concept of governance as the main theoretical framework, the book explores how Western governments and local authorities have negotiated the difficult task of defining the borders between the territories of private and public actors and also in defining the boundaries of state intervention and public interest. Focusing on the blurring of these boundaries, this book presents a re-examination of how cities were developed, both past and present.

Book excerpt: "In 1300 BC, pharaonic Egypt created a new town on the windswept banks of the Nile in Northern Sudan: Amara West. Designed as a centre for the control of occupied Upper Nubia, the town flourished for 200 years. An interdisciplinary research project, led by the British Museum, has been working at the site since 2008. What was it like to live in Egyptian Nubia? What things did the inhabitants make and how did they interact with the spiritual world? How was food prepared and how healthy were the inhabitants? How did the town change over two centuries of occupation? What role did Nubian culture play in this apparently Egyptian town? Why was the town abandoned? This book offers a glimpse of the intricacies of everyday life under empire in Egyptian Nubia."-- back cover.

Download or read book atalh y k Excavations written by Ian Hodder and published by British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the main excavations at Neolithic Çatalhöyük East undertaken from 2009 to 2017. The site is well known because of its large size, elaborate symbolism and wall paintings, and long history of excavation. This volume covers the last period of excavation directed by Ian Hodder in the North and South Areas of the site. It also describes the work conducted in the GDN Area on the later phases of occupation. The main aim of these excavations was to understand the layout and social geography of the settlement (both houses and open areas) and to situate the elaborate art and symbolism within a secure architectural and depositional context. Excavation and conservation methods are described and the campaign of geophysical prospection is described. Considerable focus is placed on detailed dating using Bayesian modeling that alters significantly our understanding of the organization of the settlement. New light is thrown on the degree of contemporaneity of buildings and on the continuities and breaks in house occupation and in the site as a whole. A fuller understanding has also been reached of the variability of houses and burials and of how these variations relate to social differentiation. The descriptions of excavated units, features and buildings incorporates results from the analyses of animal bone, chipped stone, groundstone, shell, ceramics, phytoliths, micromorphology. The integration of different types of data and of different voices within the excavation team mimics the process of collaborative interpretation that took place during the excavation and post-excavation process.
