Book Optimization Theory and Applications

Download or read book Optimization Theory and Applications written by L. Cesari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of lectures and courses in calculus of variations and optimization taught for many years at the University of Michigan to graduate students at various stages of their careers, and always to a mixed audience of students in mathematics and engineering. It attempts to present a balanced view of the subject, giving some emphasis to its connections with the classical theory and to a number of those problems of economics and engineering which have motivated so many of the present developments, as well as presenting aspects of the current theory, particularly value theory and existence theorems. However, the presentation ofthe theory is connected to and accompanied by many concrete problems of optimization, classical and modern, some more technical and some less so, some discussed in detail and some only sketched or proposed as exercises. No single part of the subject (such as the existence theorems, or the more traditional approach based on necessary conditions and on sufficient conditions, or the more recent one based on value function theory) can give a sufficient representation of the whole subject. This holds particularly for the existence theorems, some of which have been conceived to apply to certain large classes of problems of optimization. For all these reasons it is essential to present many examples (Chapters 3 and 6) before the existence theorems (Chapters 9 and 11-16), and to investigate these examples by means of the usual necessary conditions, sufficient conditions, and value function theory.

Book Integral Methods in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Integral Methods in Science and Engineering written by Mario Paul Ahues and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Good reference text; clusters well with other Birkhauser integral equations & integral methods books (Estrada and Kanwal, Kythe/Puri, Constanda, et al). * Includes many practical applications/techniques for applied mathematicians, physicists, engineers, grad students. * The contributors to the volume draw from a number of physical domains and propose diverse treatments for various mathematical models through the use of integration as an essential solution tool. * Physically meaningful problems in areas related to finite and boundary element techniques, conservation laws, hybrid approaches, ordinary and partial differential equations, and vortex methods are explored in a rigorous, accessible manner. * The new results provided are a good starting point for future exploitation of the interdisciplinary potential of integration as a unifying methodology for the investigation of mathematical models.

Book Stability Theory of Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Stability Theory of Dynamical Systems written by N.P. Bhatia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of classic reference work. Over 400 books have been published in the series Classics in Mathematics, many remain standard references for their subject. All books in this series are reissued in a new, inexpensive softcover edition to make them easily accessible to younger generations of students and researchers. "... The book has many good points: clear organization, historical notes and references at the end of every chapter, and an excellent bibliography. The text is well-written, at a level appropriate for the intended audience, and it represents a very good introduction to the basic theory of dynamical systems."

Book Symposia Mathematica

Download or read book Symposia Mathematica written by Sam Stuart and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposia Mathematica, Volume I focuses on research in the field of mathematics and its applications. This book discusses the definition of S-semigroup, extensions of R modules, structure of H, laws of conservation and equations of motion, and measures of strain. The basic equations for continua with internal rotations, general concepts of the discrete particle mechanics of matter, and implications of the first law of thermodynamics are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the homomorphism theorem, magneto-elastic interactions, transition from discrete particle mechanics to continuum mechanics, and passage to the continuum. This publication is suitable for mathematicians, specialists, and students interested in mathematical structures.

Book Kinetic Data Analysis

Download or read book Kinetic Data Analysis written by Laszlo Endrenyi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic models have often served as useful examples in develop ing the methodology for the design and analysis of experiments in volving mechanistic models. Thus, it is not surprising that these approaches have been applied quite successfully to kinetic obser vations. Nevertheless, many ideas and methods were developed indepen dently in various fields of science. More often than not, investi gators working in one area have not been aware of relevant advances in others. In order to facilitate the desirable exchange of ideas, a one-day symposium was held in Toronto in conjunction with the XIth International Congress of Biochemistry. Biochemists, pharmacolo gists,> and statisticians came together and discussed many of the topics presented in this volume. Participants in the symposium believed that it would be use ful to publish a collection of the presentations together with some additional material. The present volume is the result. It is an attempt to convey some of the interdisciplinary concerns involv ing mechanistic, and especially kinetic, model building. The coverage is by no means exhaustive: many principles, methods, and problems are not included. Even the applications are limited to biochemistry and pharmacology. Still, the symposium highlighted areas of current interest. These included questions of weighting, robust parameter estimation, pooled data analysis, model identification, and the design of experiments. These topics, which are of interest in many fields of science, are discus3ed also in the present volume.
