Download or read book Crazy Sh t Old People Say written by Geoff Tibballs and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With old age comes grey hair, dodgy knees, a sudden passion for re-runs of Murder, She Wrote, and an apparent God-given licence to speak one's mind and be generally offensive without fear of retribution. Under the guise of passing on the benefits of their experience to family members or just casual acquaintances, old people exercise their right to swear, cuss and insult as they please. These feisty philosophers take no prisoners as they use their scalpel-like tongues to dissect modern life and the younger generations. If challenged over their outrageous comments, they'll play the age card: you know the sort of thing - 'I'm eighty-six, I've fought for my country, and if I want to call you a no-good, lowdown, useless fuckwit, then I'll call you a no-good, lowdown, useless fuckwit, Vicar.' Other gems include: It bugs me when people say, 'Life is short.' What the hell does it mean? Life is the longest damn thing anyone ever does! Are they going to do something that's longer? Son, if it's got tits or tyres, you're gonna have trouble with it. We all have our disappointments in life, son, and I'm talking to mine right now. The only way in which life resembles a bed of roses is that you encounter a lot of pricks along the way. Sure I'm surprised you can't get a job, son. I heard the world was crying out for someone who is lazy, has no qualifications but can spit gum into a waste paper basket from ten feet. Don't you think you might stand a better chance of becoming a captain of industry if you got rid of some of that metal shit on your body - like the nose stud and the eyebrow rings? Donald Trump may have a crap haircut but I bet he doesn't have pierced fucking nipples. Son, if life was fair, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators would be dead. The secret of a happy life is to run out of cash and air at exactly the same time.

Download or read book Jottings to the End of His Days written by T. S. Matthews and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jottings to the End of His Days" by T. S. Matthews began a few years before he turned 80. Since the last one appeared in 1990 only months before his death (12 days shy of his ninetieth birthday) they are, in the main, the jottings of an octogenarian. They don't seem so, except for those concerned with becoming and being old and those contemplating death. Most seem to have too much bite or juice to have come from the pen of an old man. They were almost invariably written down on little scraps of paper, never bigger than an old envelope, usually at night with some drink in him, though some were the product of the very early morning before anyone else was awake. Matthews then recorded the ones he liked into blue notebooks. In fact, these "jottings" reveal more about Matthews and his inner self than either of his autobiographical books. There are more intimate revelations, flashes of indecent exposure, if you will, than appeared in his earlier work. Rearranged and further screened, they paint an extraordinary portrait of T. S. Matthews than any biographer would find hard to match. What a portrait it is! About the Author Thomas Stanley Matthews was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the only son of an Episcopal clergyman who later became bishop of New Jersey. Matthews was educated at Princeton University and New College, Oxford. Although expected to follow his father into the church, he lost his faith as a young adult. More to his interest was poetry and writing. After Oxford he married Princeton town belle Juliana Stevens Cuyler and wrote for the "New Republic." A few years later he became a book reviewer for "TIME Magazine." Lifting the level of intellectual coverage "TIME" gave the literary world, Matthews was among the first to discover and give wider currency to such poets as Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, on whom he would later write a biography. By 1943 he landed the managing editor position at "TIME," which he held for the next seven years. To his fellow editors he was known as the toughest and the best editor in America. When Matthews resigned in 1953, he was offered a position establishing "TIME-in-Britain." Businesspeople found that "TIME-in-Britain" would be ready to make a profit after six months. Unfortunately, Luce & Company decided that "Sports Illustrated" would make more money, so "TIME-in-Britain" was scratched. Widowed five years earlier, Matthews felt no desire to return to Eisenhower's America, so he settled in England to do what he had always wanted to do: write poetry and books. While he visited the States many times, Matthews, in effect, became an expatriate. He did most of his writing in England where he died at his home in Cavendish, Suffolk, just twelve days short of his ninetieth birthday.

Download or read book 5 000 Great One Liners written by Grant Tucker and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mate told me that I just don't understand irony. Which was ironic because we were at a bus stop at the time. A dyslexic man walks into a bra. An onion just told me a joke. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. A priest, a rabbi and a blind man walk into a bar and the bartender says, 'What is this, some kind of joke?' I got chatting to a lumberjack in a pub. He seemed like a decent feller. I'll never forget what my granddad said to me just before he kicked the bucket. He said, 'Grandson, how far do you think I can kick this bucket?' Whether told in the rugby clubs of Wales or the gentlemen's clubs of London, their sharpness and simplicity unites us all. Short, sweet and wickedly clever, they hold a special place in the annals of comedy, and as the Twitter age heralds a resurrection of the art form, there seems no better time to celebrate the immortal one-liner. In this riveting read, Times diary columnist Grant Tucker does just that, bringing together 5,000 of the funniest one-liners ever told in one definitive volume. Laugh-out-loud funny, 5,000 Great One-Liners has all the quips, zingers, puns and wisecracks you'll ever need - and a whole lot more.

Download or read book Turning Japanese written by David Galef and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gou ni itte wa, gou ni shitagae, runs an old Japanese proverb: Obey the customs of the village you enter. Just don’t overdo things. It may already be too late for Cricket Collins, a recent Ivy League graduate who travels to Osaka for his first real job as an English instructor. The time is late 1970s, with Japan quickly becoming the new find-yourself region that India was to the backpack set in the 1960s. From pachinko parlors to paper cranes, tea ceremonies to translation problems, everything is entrancing to Cricket, at first, as he throws himself headfirst into a two-thousand-year-old culture. But soon he gets fired from his teaching job at Kansai Gakuin for petty theft, and on a brief trip to Korea he becomes embroiled in a sexual misadventure with painful after-effects. Spinning slowly out of orbit in his free-floating expatriate existence, he starts to lose touch with family, friends, and reality. It isn’t until he returns home to America that he begins to turn Japanese with a vengeance. Turning Japanese is as much about the allure of a foreign culture as it is about the divided existence of an expat and the terrors of ones own mind. Be careful of breaking down the barriers between two cultures: the breakdown you create may be your own.
