Download or read book Impacts of Forest Harvesting on Long Term Site Productivity written by W.J. Dyck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Energy Agency Bioenergy Agreement was initiated as the Forestry Energy Agreement in 1978. It was expanded in 1986 to form the Bioenergy Agreement. Since that time the Agreement has thrived with some fifteen countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and the CEC) currently being signatories. The objective of the Agreement is to establish increased programme and project cooperation between the participants in the field of bioenergy. The environmental consequences of intensive forest harvesting have been the subject of intense interest for the Agreement from its initiation. This interest was formulated as a Cooperative Project under the Forestry Energy Agreement in 1984. It developed further under each of the subsequent three-year Tasks of the Bioenergy Agreement (Task III, Activity 3 "Nutritional consequences of intensive forest harvesting on site productivity", Task VI, Activity 6 "Environmental impacts of harvesting" and more recently Task IX, Activity 4 "Environmental impacts of intensive harvesting". The work has been supported by five main countries from within the Bioenergy Agreement: Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, UK, and USA. The continued work has resulted in a significant network of scientists work ing together towards a common objective - that of generating a better under standing of the processes involved in nutrient cycling and the development of management regimes which will maintain or enhance long term site productivity.
Download or read book Innovative Solutions in Fluid Particle Systems and Renewable Energy Management written by Tannous, Katia and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of natural resource depletion due to high energy demands has become a key concern in both the developed and developing worlds. To alleviate these concerns, researchers around the world are exploring sustainable methods for generating energy. Innovative Solutions in Fluid-Particle Systems and Renewable Energy Management presents phenomenological, experimental, and theoretical research, as well as market criteria and business models concerning the development of small- and large-scale chemical and energy plants. Associating academic and industrial experiences, this book highlights current topics in sustainable energy management and development with an emphasis on obtaining liquid, gaseous, and solid fuels using residues and energetic biomasses. Academicians, researchers, and technology developers will find this book useful in furthering their own knowledge and research in this field. A pivotal publication in the field of engineering, this title covers a range of topics including, among others, cellulosic feedstock, agricultural biomass, fluid dynamics, gasification processes, energy extraction from raw materials, and environmental sustainability.

Download or read book Forest Health written by John D. Castello and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Health: An Integrated Perspective is the first book to define an ecologically rational, conceptual framework that unifies and integrates the many sub-disciplines that comprise the science of forest health and protection. This new global approach applies to boreal, temperate, tropical, natural, managed, even-aged, uneven-aged and urban forests, as well as plantations. Readers of the text can use real datasets to assess the sustainability of four forests around the world. Datasets for the case studies are at www.cambridge.org/9780521766692, and the text provides stepwise instructions for performing the calculations in Microsoft Excel. Readers can follow along as the editors perform the same calculations and interpret the results. Elevating forest health from a fuzzy concept to an ecologically sound paradigm, this is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students and professionals interested in forest health, protection, entomology, pathology and ecology.
Download or read book Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management written by Robert John Raison and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject.
