Book excerpt: Since the rise of scientific endeavour through the years of Newton, Descartes, Bacon, and so on, to Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin with their ideas of the gradual changes to Earth's surface and animal species from a common ancestor over vast amounts of time, there has been the determined throw-off of all things non-material, non-objective, non-quantifiable, non-empirical. Since Darwin's time the assumption has become hardened that Nature does not produce anything other than what is fundamentally material, so does not produce anything that would try to pass itself off as non-material. Not surprisingly the outcome has been the rise of philosophical and scientific materialism, with its emphasis on the methods of classical physics for all of Science and the definition of man as essentially the same as any other physical organism. The Mind-Brain Identity Theory in particular has pointed out that there could not be a non-material consciousness or mind, since animals only have brains to work from. Man therefore is said to consist of a brain only and not any non-material consciousness or mind, without values of meaning and purpose of any sort. While it looks to be obvious to everyone else that we have a consciousness, feelings, sensations of red or emotions of love or do things for a purpose, or exercise free choices of various kinds, the Mind-Brain Identity Theorists try to prove that human beings are only biological units randomly thrown up by evolution, without any good reason. Our children and wives are only biological units, automatons fulfilling evolution's trundling path, units without love, sentiment, feelings, etc., etc. Any such mental things are said to be an illusion. The implications of a brain-only mind-less organic computer or robot, driven by the laws of physics, would be laughable was it not for the academic status of those who perpetuate the thesis. 'Why Your Mind is not Your Brain' tells of the other philosophers, cardiologists, neurosurgeons, physicists, biologists, and so on who show that mind is actually separate from the brain. That when the brain dies, it does not mean the mind dies. Far from being Identical with Mind, evidence indicates that the brain is a material unit for processing mental phenomena; it is an organ for transmitting information that it receives much like a radio or television. We don't expect a radio or television show to be Identical to the appliance's function, nor produced by a network inside it somewhere. Mind is non-material, uses the brain as its organ of expression, while at the same time the brain's configuration only allows some information, appropriate to physical life, and prevents much more from being expressed. There is more to Mind than the brain permits. We are aware that various kinds of paranormal phenomena, rapid healing, miracles, spontaneous remission, Savantism, Terminal Lucidity, and so on, are related to the brain's inhibiting functions being breached on occasions. The separation of Mind and Brain allows for the wider nature of a human being to be clearly given; as an entity essentially non-material.
