Book excerpt: This phenomenological research involved interviews with Black, African American research participants who persisted and graduated from a four-year undergraduate higher education institution in Minnesota. The purpose of this research was to identify critical factors that positively influenced the retention of Black African American students in higher education. The emerging themes told stories of how academic reputation and personal effects influenced college choice, how socio economic status drove them to persist in spite of their challenges, and how they coped with microaggressions. The data also identified a collective value of accountability, and how it affected their decision to ask for academic support, and told stories of how each research participant persisted in the absence of belonging, struggled to find support on campus, and how much they appreciated the value of positive interactions with faculty. In the end, the data proved the unexpected. With the exception of one research participant, the overwhelming unfavorable lived experiences proved that without an inherent determination to succeed against all odds, the research participants would have not persisted. The institutions failed miserable in providing a climate of inclusivity, belonging, and one that supports retention of Black African American students.

The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

Book excerpt: Brief Literature Review: While environmental factors play a role in a student's institutional retention, student attitude and behavior may be just as significant to retention and degree completion. Exposure and prior knowledge of the social conventions of academia can be instrumental in preparing students for achieving success in a higher education setting (Farkas, 1996). Students who do not have family or friends who have been exposed to higher education cannot pass down the key tools to be academically successful in college. Students identifying as first generation are often from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and encounter decreased levels of family support, lessened college expectations, and lower educational values among parents (McConnell, 2000; Terrenzini, Springer, Yaeger, Pascarella, & Nora, 1996). Statement of the Problem: Institutions looking to promote the academic persistence of African American students may find that traditional retention practices may not work as well with students of color. Student retention is widely based on student engagement, including academic and social involvement with the campus community (Kuh, 2005). Identifying the ways in which academic and social supports effect attitudes of African American students towards academic persistence will allow colleges and universities to enhance existing programs or create programs to include support for students specifically through means of academic and social integration. Methodology: The study used a quantitative method to conduct research on all undergraduate African American students currently enrolled at a diverse university located in California's capital. The study employed an electronic survey, and 103 students participated in the research. Conclusions and Recommendations: African American students' most influential form of support came from themselves, indicating a high level of academic self-efficacy. The study revealed that African American students did not engage in academic and social activities on campus events with much frequency, but there seemed to be a slightly higher rate of academic engagement utilizing social informality than purely social activities between African American students and their peers. Understanding the influence of both academic and social support systems on student success, specifically African American student success, may allow institutions to foster or create support systems in alliance with academic programs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the influential effects various factors had on the recruitment and the retention of African American undergraduates at TexasA & M University, as perceived by those African Americans who had successfullycompleted their plans of study and received baccalaureate degrees between May, 1998 and December, 2003. Data were acquired through e-mail surveys in which three massive e-mailings were broadcast from the collected files of The Association of Former Students of TexasA & M. In this survey, the questionnaire contained closed-ended questions with five-part Likert-type responses. Additionally, the African American alumni were provided the opportunity to recommend additional practices for future recruitment and retention of African American undergraduates at A & M. An extensive review of the literature that supports this record of study regarding recruitment and retention of African American undergraduate students was made, and in the review, family involvement in education and home/school/campus characteristics revealed numerous studies that support the positive relationship between family involvement in education and success. There is, however, evidence of barriers, frustration, and discouragement experienced by these African American undergraduate stakeholders in their campus relationships. Research findings of this study included: 1. The research showed that for this population, the academic standing of A & M is the most influential recruitment practice. Recruitment efforts should concentrate on the most effective recruitment strategies by developing materials that highlight and focus on academic standing as reported by leading publications indicating how A & M is ranked against colleges and universities across the nation. 2. The research showed that the available curriculum at A & M is also an influential recruitment practice. From data discovered in this research, engineering, computer technology, psychology, and journalism were the most popular curriculum attraction to African American students. Implications from the research include: 1. One significant difference was the finding that the African American females looked more favorably on an institution of higher learning that had a larger enrollment. 2. The other significant difference was the finding that African American males looked more favorably at institutions of higher learning that held higher national ranking in sports in which they were interested.

Wood & Harris (2014) Five Domains Conceptual Framework is a holistic framework developed to address unbalanced retention and educational outcomes for African American male college students in a community college setting. This research study seeks shed light on the importance of (e.g., Pre-College, College Achievement, and Post-College Success) united with higher education institutions responsibilities (e.g., faculty engagement, college campus climate, and campus academic and social resources) to improve retention and academic outcomes for African American male college students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship between academic and nonacademic determinants of academic achievement and persistence and to identify how university geographic location influences the likelihood of Black male persistence. Quantitative data was drawn from the 2012/14 Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) Longitudinal Study (BPS: 12/14) conducted by the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES)to explore third-year academic achievement and persistence for Black males. This study identified two research questions, guided by the theoretical frameworks of Tinto’s student institutional departure model and Astin’s Input-Environment-Outputmodel to assess Black male decisions to stay or leave college. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the means and percentages for all independent and dependent variables included in this analysis. Additionally, a multiple regression was used to predict the relationship between academic and non-academic determinants of academic achievement for Black males. Furthermore, a binomial logistic regression was used to predict the probability that university geographic location influences the likelihood of Black male persistence.The findings from this study indicated that when controlling for academic achievement (third-year), high school GPA had a positive effect on Black male third-year persistence, while financial aid (federal and private student loans) had a negative effect on Black male GPA their third year of college. Additionally, this study indicated that geographic location did not influence the likelihood of third-year persistence. In fact, the findings in this study demonstrated that having a job on campus during the first year of college positively influenced Black male third-year persistence.

While many researchers have explored factors of retention and persistence for African American men attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs), not much is known about of success for African American men attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The purpose of this study was to discover factors promoting student success. Guiding this examination was a theoretical framework of participatory research, which emanated from a critical theory perspective. This methodology offered a cohesive relationship between the researcher and participants and is purported to foster empowerment and to give voice to people who have been voiceless. Eleven African American men, who entered a public, urban HBCU through its pre-college program and persisted to junior and senior status, provided a retrospective view of factors promoting their academic success. Four retention specialists were also interviewed to discern their perspectives about the success of African American students in college. The African American men engaged in an in-depth interview and follow up interviews were conducted for additional information or clarification. A qualitative methodology was used with the following two questions: (1) How do educational and personal factors contribute to the academic success of Black males attending an urban, public, four-year historically Black institution? (2) How are these factors of persistence characterized? These questions produced thirteen extrinsic and four intrinsic factors that were identified as promoting success. Based on the study, student persistence appears to be a joint responsibility between the student and the personnel of the university. The university is also accountable in its attempt to ensure a student-centered environment to encourage academic and social integration, promote intellectual curiosity, and nurture students' growth and development. -- Abstract.
