Book Diagnosis and Management of HIV AIDS

Download or read book Diagnosis and Management of HIV AIDS written by Usha K. Baveja and published by Anshan Pub. This book was released on 2005 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragic proliferation of HIV/AIDS on the Indian sub-continent is a matter of international concern. This is the first comprehensive Indian work on HIV/AIDS, with each contributing author an expert in their field of specialisation. It comprehensively covers the issues and complexities of this virus/disease, keeping in view the social and cultural backgrounds, constrained financial and infrastructural resources, and the peculiar and distinct HIV strains, as compared to other countries. It presents the spectrum of latest information, from basic HIV science to diagnosis, management and ethical and legal issues, and contains suitable figures and flowcharts for easy comprehension. It covers the application and efficacy of antiretroviral therapy, the management of opportunistic infections, AIDS and tuberculosis, and discusses the monitoring of immune functions and viral load. The book also deals with non-clinical issues, such as the correct approach to an HIV patient, home-based care, and confidential voluntary counselling. There is an emphasis on HIV infection in women and children, prevention of transmission through various routes, post-exposure prophylaxis and bio-safety practices, and finally a chapter on the current status of HIV vaccines under trial. This is an up to date, thoroughly researched book for practising physicians, STD specialists, paediatricians and obstetricians, and a useful reference work for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and NGOs.

Book HIV and the Blood Supply

    Book Details:
  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1995-10-05
  • ISBN : 0309053293
  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book HIV and the Blood Supply written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-10-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early years of the AIDS epidemic, thousands of Americans became infected with HIV through the nation's blood supply. Because little reliable information existed at the time AIDS first began showing up in hemophiliacs and in others who had received transfusions, experts disagreed about whether blood and blood products could transmit the disease. During this period of great uncertainty, decision-making regarding the blood supply became increasingly difficult and fraught with risk. This volume provides a balanced inquiry into the blood safety controversy, which involves private sexual practices, personal tragedy for the victims of HIV/AIDS, and public confidence in America's blood services system. The book focuses on critical decisions as information about the danger to the blood supply emerged. The committee draws conclusions about what was doneâ€"and recommends what should be done to produce better outcomes in the face of future threats to blood safety. The committee frames its analysis around four critical area: Product treatmentâ€"Could effective methods for inactivating HIV in blood have been introduced sooner? Donor screening and referralâ€"including a review of screening to exlude high-risk individuals. Regulations and recall of contaminated bloodâ€"analyzing decisions by federal agencies and the private sector. Risk communicationâ€"examining whether infections could have been averted by better communication of the risks.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-trends in the occurrence of HIV seropositivity are the basis for projecting the future course of the epidemic. This study presents quarterly rates of HIV infection during 1986 to 1989 in U.S. Navy active-duty enlisted personnel, a large, serially-tested population. During this period, the U.S. Navy administered 1,795,578 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests to 848,632 active-duty Navy enlisted personnel. There were 2,438 seropositive personnel identified, including 778 with a previous negative test. Three types 0f quarterly rates are reported here: the seropositive rate per 1,000 tested the seroconversion rate per 1,000 tested (with a previous negative test); and the seroconversion rate per 1,000 person-years. Rates by all three methods declined between 1986 and 1989. The mean seropositive rate per 1,000 tested showed a steady decline from 2.9 in 1986 to 0.5 in 1989 (p

Download or read book AIDS Testing written by Gerald Schochetman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the two years since the publication of the first edition of this book, the global spread of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has continued. HIV was estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 to have at least 13 million individuals worldwide, with 1 million infected infected in the United States. HIV/AIDS in the United States has become the leading cause of death among men 25 to 44 years of age and the fifth leading cause of death among women of the same age group. Prevention of HIV infection remains a global challenge. Testing for HIV is the cornerstone for surveillance and prevention programs and for the provision of appropriate medical care for those who are infected. Such testing is equally essential to the search for effective antivirus drugs and vaccines. This second edition of AIDS Testing incorporates the most current thinking on test methodology and interpretation, some of which has changed considerably over the past two years. This edition also has been expanded to include a section consisting of six chapters on test applica tions and a section consisting of four chapters on management issues. This edition, like the first, describes in clear terms all the complex ele ments of testing, including applications, scientific principles, quality assurance, safety, and medical, ethical, and legal considerations.

Book The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States

Download or read book The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe's "Black Death" contributed to the rise of nation states, mercantile economies, and even the Reformation. Will the AIDS epidemic have similar dramatic effects on the social and political landscape of the twenty-first century? This readable volume looks at the impact of AIDS since its emergence and suggests its effects in the next decade, when a million or more Americans will likely die of the disease. The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States addresses some of the most sensitive and controversial issues in the public debate over AIDS. This landmark book explores how AIDS has affected fundamental policies and practices in our major institutions, examining: How America's major religious organizations have dealt with sometimes conflicting values: the imperative of care for the sick versus traditional views of homosexuality and drug use. Hotly debated public health measures, such as HIV antibody testing and screening, tracing of sexual contacts, and quarantine. The potential risk of HIV infection to and from health care workers. How AIDS activists have brought about major change in the way new drugs are brought to the marketplace. The impact of AIDS on community-based organizations, from volunteers caring for individuals to the highly political ACT-UP organization. Coping with HIV infection in prisons. Two case studies shed light on HIV and the family relationship. One reports on some efforts to gain legal recognition for nonmarital relationships, and the other examines foster care programs for newborns with the HIV virus. A case study of New York City details how selected institutions interact to give what may be a picture of AIDS in the future. This clear and comprehensive presentation will be of interest to anyone concerned about AIDS and its impact on the country: health professionals, sociologists, psychologists, advocates for at-risk populations, and interested individuals.

Book HIV Screening and Access to Care

Download or read book HIV Screening and Access to Care written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased HIV screening may help identify more people with the disease, but there may not be enough resources to provide them with the care they need. The Institute of Medicine's Committee on HIV Screening and Access to Care concludes that more practitioners must be trained in HIV/AIDS care and treatment and their hospitals, clinics, and health departments must receive sufficient funding to meet a growing demand for care.
