Book Molecular and Laser Spectroscopy

Download or read book Molecular and Laser Spectroscopy written by Zu-Geng Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectra of molecules containing more than one atom are necessarily of single atoms. They are correspondingly much more complex than those richer, not only in the number of spectral lines, but also in qualitatively different phenomena which do not have any counterpart in single atoms. Historically, molecular spectra have revealed much fundamental phy sics, such as the connection between nuclear spin statistics. They have pro vided models of physical systems which have been useful in quite different areas, such as particle physics. Most especially, molecular spectra are of fundamental importance in understanding chemical bonding. They reveal not only bond lengths but also the strength of the bonding potential between atoms. Moreover, these measurements are obtained for electronic excited states, as well as for the ground state, and for unstable short-lived molecules. In recent years, tunable lasers have provided powerful tools for the measurement and analysis of molecular spectra. Even before that, molecules were being used in lasers, most notably in the carbon dioxide laser, which finds many industrial applications.

Book Lasers Spectroscopy and New Ideas

Download or read book Lasers Spectroscopy and New Ideas written by William M. Yen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume originated in a happy event honoring Arthur Schawlow on his 65th birthday. As a research physicist, Schawlow has been a major infiuence on the present nature of physics and of high technology. He has also had a role, through the American Physical Society and other organizations, in shaping policy for the world of physicists. Important as these professional activities have been, the contributions to this volume were not prepared just for these reasons, but more for Art Schawlow the friend, colleague, and teacher. I am one who has had the privilege of knowing and collaborating with Art, probably over a longer period of time than others participating in this volume, and in a number of different enterprises; his friendship and stimulating scientific abilities are a very significant part of my own life. It is hence a pleasure to take part in this volume celebrating his contributions to science and to scientists. Schawlow's career has been geographically centered at the University of Toronto, Columbia University, the Bell Telephone Laboratories, and Stan ford University. But, as is illustrated by the papers of this volume, its effects and his personal infiuence have diffused widely. In his own work, Art Schawlow is noted for thoughtful imagination, keen physical intuition, and what might be thought an interest in gadgets - not just any gadgets, but beautiful and innovative mechanisms or new techniques in which he charac teristically recognizes important potentials.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the IUPAC Physical Chemistry Division this definitive manual, now in its third edition, is designed to improve the exchange of scientific information among the readers in different disciplines and across different nations. This book has been systematically brought up to date and new sections added to reflect the increasing volume of scientific literature and terminology and expressions being used. The Third Edition reflects the experience of the contributors with the previous editions and the comments and feedback have been integrated into this essential resource. This edition has been compiled in machine-readable form and will be available online.

Book Frontiers in Laser Spectroscopy

Download or read book Frontiers in Laser Spectroscopy written by Theo W. Hänsch and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1994 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of general laser spectroscopy is being revolutionized by often dramatic advances in the technology of tunable sources, including the important trend towards miniaturization and towards reliable solid-state devices. The range of laser spectroscopy is expanding to include many more interdisciplinary applications, ranging from surface science to astrophysics. Laser spectroscopy can reveal new phenomena such as parity violation. It can rival and complement experiments with giant particle accelerators. The field of quantum optics has seen very significant advances in the state of the art. It has become possible to experiment with just a few quanta of the electromagnetic field, and fascinating new ideas, such as quantum-nondemolition measurements of photon numbers, have emerged. Laser spectroscopy is even beginning to shed light on the still elusive relationship between quantum mechanics and classical deterministic chaos. This Enrico Fermi school, in keeping with the tradition of previous schools on this subject, covers the important developments made in the field of spectroscopy at a time when advances in the state-of-the-art had reached a critical point.
