Book The Molecular Biology of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

Download or read book The Molecular Biology of Schizosaccharomyces pombe written by Richard Egel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is the favoured tool of many productive research groups throughout the world, serving as a useful model for fundamental principles and mechanisms, such as genome organization, differential gene regulation, cell-cycle control, signal transduction, or cellular morphogenesis. This book collates the current state of knowledge derived from molecular studies in this simple eukaryotic microorganism. The entire sequence of its genome has been completed, emphasizing the comparative value and model status of this yeast. The individual chapters, highlighting up-to-date views on prominent aspects of molecular organization, were written by active research scientists, presenting the results of their investigations to other workers in neighbouring fields. This book intends to serve the fission yeast community as a handy source of reference for years to come. It will also be of particular value to the ever-increasing number of researchers starting to look into fission yeast affairs for comparative reasons from other platforms of molecular genetics and cell biology.

  • ISBN : 3540706186
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Biology of the Fungal Cell written by Richard J. Howard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes the fungal cell unique among eukaryotes and what features are shared? This volume addresses some of the most prominent and fascinating facets of questions as they pertain to the growth and development of both yeast and hyphal forms of fungi, beginning with subcellular components – then cell organization, polarity, growth, differentiation and beyond – to the cell biology of spores, biomechanics of invasive growth, plant pathogenesis, mycorrhizal symbiosis and colonial networks. Throughout, structural, molecular and ecological aspects are integrated to form a contemporary look at the biology of the fungal cell.

Book Cell Polarity

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.R. Bartles
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1998-08-25
  • ISBN : 0080877117
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Cell Polarity written by J.R. Bartles and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-08-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few cells conform to the stereotype of the spherical blob hastily scribbled on chalkboards and, regrettably, sometimes even displayed prominently in textbooks. Instead, real cells display a remarkable degree of structural and functional asymmetry. In modern cell biological parlance, this asymmetry has come to be lumped under the general heading of "cell polarity". Cell polarity is by no means restricted to the cells of tissues and organs, but can also be displayed by cells that lead a more solitary existence. The amazing extent to which cell morphology is correlated with function has long been a source of inspiration for biologists. Today the fascination continues unabated in the field of cell polarity, where it is fueled by an ever-deepening appreciation for the ways that fundamental cellular processes, such as membrane trafficking and cytoskeleton assembly, contribute to the establishment and maintenance of cell polarity. In the ensuing chapters, a collection of experts will summarize and interpret the findings obtained from basic research on cell polarity in a diverse array of experimental systems.

Book Morphogenesis and Pathogenicity in Fungi

Download or read book Morphogenesis and Pathogenicity in Fungi written by José Pérez Martín and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious fungal diseases continue to take their toll in terms of human suffering and enormous economic losses. Invasive infections by opportunistic fungal pathogens are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in immuno-compromised individuals. At the same time, plant pathogenic fungi have devastating effects on crop production and human health. New strategies for antifungal control are required to meet the challenges posed by these agents, and such approaches can only be developed through the identification of novel biochemical and molecular targets. However, in contrast to bacterial pathogens, fungi display a wealth of “lifestyles” and modes of infection. This diversity makes it extremely difficult to identify individual, evolutionarily conserved virulence determinants and represents a major stumbling block in the search for common antifungal targets. In order to activate the infection programme, all fungal pathogens must undergo appropriate developmental transitions that involve cellular differentiation and the introduction of a new morphogenetic programme. How growth, cell cycle progression and morphogenesis are co-ordinately regulated during development has been an active area of research in fungal model systems such as budding and fission yeast. By contrast, we have only limited knowledge of how these developmental processes shape fungal pathogenicity, or of the role of the cell cycle and morphogenesis regulators as true virulence factors. This book combines state-of-the-art expertise from diverse pathogen model systems to update our current understanding of the regulation of fungal morphogenesis as a key determinant of pathogenicity in fungi.
