Download or read book Apolog a y cr tica de Espa a en el siglo XVIII written by Antonio Mestre and published by Marcial Pons Historia. This book was released on 2003 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Configuration of the Spanish Public Sphere written by David Jiménez Torres and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the explosion of the indignados movement beginning in 2011, there has been a renewed interest in the concept of the “public sphere” in a Spanish context: how it relates to society and to political power, and how it has evolved over the centuries. The Configuration of the Spanish Public Sphere brings together contributions from leading scholars in Hispanic studies, across a wide range of disciplines, to investigate various aspects of these processes, offering a long-term, panoramic view that touches on one of the most urgent issues for contemporary European societies.

Book European Modernity and the Passionate South

Download or read book European Modernity and the Passionate South written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long nineteenth century, dominant stereotypes presented people of the Mediterranean South as particularly passionate and unruly, therefore incapable of adapting to the moral and political duties imposed by European civilization and modernity. This book studies, for the first time in comparative perspective, the gender dimension of a process that legitimised internal hierarchies between North and South in the continent. It also analyses how this phenomenon was responded to from Spain and Italy, pointing to the similarities and differences between both countries. Drawing on travel narratives, satires, philosophical works, novels, plays, operas, and paintings, it shows how this transnational process affected, in changing historical contexts, the ways in which nation, gender, and modernity were imagined and mutually articulated.

Book Europa y el pensamiento espa ol del siglo XVIII

Download or read book Europa y el pensamiento espa ol del siglo XVIII written by Francisco Sánchez-Blanco and published by Alianza Editorial. This book was released on 1991 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Music and Modernity in Enlightenment Spain

Download or read book Music and Modernity in Enlightenment Spain written by Ana P Sánchez-Rojo and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By showing how music intersected with wider cultural affairs, such as philosophy and criticism, this book connects music and the modern in eighteenth-century Spain within the context of Enlightenment thought. Histories of modern Europe often present late eighteenth-century Spain as a backward place, haunted by the Inquisition and struggling to keep pace with modernity. While Spain under Charles III (1759-1788) pushed for economic and cultural modernization, many elites and the public at large resisted Enlightenment ideas. For conservatives, the modern would in time show its fragility, and Spain would withstand the collapse thanks to its firm grounding in the pillars of monarchy, religion, and traditional forms of knowledge. One source of this solid foundation was long-established musical knowledge based on the rules of counterpoint. In contrast, modernizers argued that Spain could be true to its essence, yet modern and cosmopolitan at the same time: they favoured cosmopolitan genres, such as Italian opera and artistic expression rather than counterpoint rules. At other times, ambivalence toward modernity produced creative uses of music, such as reinterpretations of pastoral and sentimental topics to accommodate reformist political trends. To both sides, music was crucial to the integrity of the Spanish nation. Whether and how Spain became modern would in many ways be defined and reinforced by the kinds of music that Spaniards composed and witnessed on stage. Through the study of press debates, opera and musical theatre productions, this book shows how music intersected with wider cultural affairs, such as philosophy and criticism, medicine and the human body, civilization, Bourbon policy and sentimentality. Music and Modernity in Enlightenment Spain for the first time connects music and the modern in eighteenth-century Spain within the context of Enlightenment thought.

Book Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe

Download or read book Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe written by Isabelle Dolezalek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the provenance of early modern and medieval objects from Islamic lands was largely forgotten until the "long" eighteenth century, when the first efforts were made to reconnect them with the historical contexts in which they were produced. For the first time, these Islamicate objects were read, studied and classified – and given a new place in history. Freed by scientific interest, they were used in new ways and found new homes, including in museums. More generally, the process of "rediscovery" opened up the prehistory of the discipline of Islamic art history and had a significant impact on conceptions of cultural boundaries, differences and identity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in the history of art, the art of the Islamic world, early modern history and art historiography.

Download or read book Defining Nations written by Tamar Herzog and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Tamar Herzog explores the emergence of a specifically Spanish concept of community in both Spain and Spanish America in the eighteenth century. Challenging the assumption that communities were the natural result of common factors such as language or religion, or that they were artificially imagined, Herzog reexamines early modern categories of belonging. She argues that the distinction between those who were Spaniards and those who were foreigners came about as local communities distinguished between immigrants who were judged to be willing to take on the rights and duties of membership in that community and those who were not.
