Book Thinking Beyond Icpd 10

Download or read book Thinking Beyond Icpd 10 written by Sonia Correa and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this roundtable discussion, three long-time international activists in the field of reproductive and sexual rights discuss the challenges facing the feminist women's health movement ten years after the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, and the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Their conversation reflects on the nature of the global context in 1994-95 and how that context has changed a decade later, especially in light of growing conservatism and the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic. They consider the successes and limitations of the Cairo agenda and the strategic importance of taking a long-term view. In particular, they emphasise the need for strengthening health systems worldwide, advocating for better and more woman-friendly use of existing resources and building broader coalitions. Much of the conversation explores points of commonality and difference between feminist groups on the one hand, and medical and family planning organisations on the other, as well as ways of utilising such venues as the World Social Forum. Points of greatest promise internationally include the growing youth movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights and the potential for opening up larger alliances around sexual and bodily rights with HIV/AIDS activists, sex workers, people living with HIV and AIDS and human rights organisations. © 2005 Reproductive Health Matters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contradicting the views commonly held by westerners, many Muslim countries in fact engage in a wide spectrum of reform, with the status of women as a central dimension. This anthology counters the myth that Islam and feminism are always or necessarily in opposition. A multidisciplinary group of scholars examine ideology, practice, and reform efforts in the areas of marriage, divorce, abortion, violence against women, inheritance, and female circumcision across the Islamic world, illuminating how religious and cultural prescriptions interact with legal norms, affecting change in sometimes surprising ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise guide to international disability law. It analyses the case law of the CRPD Committee and other international human rights treaty bodies, and provides commentaries on more than 50 leading cases. The author elaborates on the obligations of States Parties under the CRPD and other international treaties, while also spelling out the rights of persons with disabilities, and the different mechanisms that exist at both domestic and international levels for ensuring that those rights are respected, protected and promoted. The author also delineates the traditional differentiation between civil and political rights on the one hand, and economic, social and cultural rights on the other. He demonstrates, through analysis of the evolving case law, how the gap between these two sets of rights is gradually closing. The result is a powerful tool for political decisionmakers, academics, legal practitioners, law students, persons with disabilities and their representative organisations, human rights activists and general readers.

Download or read book The Remaking of Social Contracts written by Gita Sen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) argues that social contracts must be recreated if they are to fulfil the promise of human rights. In The Remaking of Social Contracts, leading thinkers and activists address a wide range of concerns - global economic governance, militarism, ecological tipping points, the nation state, movement-building, sexuality and reproduction, and religious fundamentalism. These themes are of wide-ranging importance for the survival and well-being of us all, and reflect the many dimensions and inter-connectedness of our lives. Using feminist lenses, the book puts forward a holistic and radical understanding of the synergies, tensions and contradictions between social movements and global, regional and local power structures and processes, and it points to other alternatives and possibilities for this fierce new world.

Book Gender Communications and Reproductive Health in International Development

Download or read book Gender Communications and Reproductive Health in International Development written by Carolina Matos and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To this day, women globally are subjected to forms of control over their bodies, and their ability to exercise their reproductive rights in particular is still constrained. Amid a rise of challenges to the advancement of women’s rights, including the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States, sexual and reproductive health rights are at the forefront of conversations about the advancement of gender equality. To determine how communications are used strategically to shape policy, Carolina Matos explores fifty-two feminist and health NGOs from across the world and how they are improving discourse on sexuality and reproductive health in the public sphere. She investigates how these organizations are making use of communications amid various contemporary challenges, including the proliferation of misinformation about women’s rights and health in the public sphere due to the actions of oppositional far-right nationalist groups. Through original in-depth interviews within the NGOs and empirical research of the institutions’ online presences, Matos unpacks the complexities of the relationship between women’s health, communications, and development, contributing to the fields of development, health communications, and gender studies, and advancing the debate on the role of feminist NGOs in advocating for women’s rights. With a postcolonial critique of the role of NGOs in development, Matos illuminates the strategic use of communications in the mediation and advocacy of gender equality and reproductive health.
