Notwithstanding the great delay in the publication of this work, it is now so far advanced that it will he printed in a year or eighteen months. In a succeeding number will he given some account of the anatomy of Fishes, and of the terms made use of in description. For the purpose of a more complete discussion of questions of geographical distribution, with their own observations, those previously made on the fish-faunae of the same streams by other writers, especially the observations on the fishes of the Tennessee Basin by Professor Agassiz; those on the fishes of the basins of the Santee (Catawaba), Tennessee, and Cumberland, by Professor Cope, and on the fishes of the Cumberland, Tennessee, Alabama, and Altamaha basins by Professor Jordan. The purpose of this paper is to give a resume of all that is certainly known in regard to ichthyology of the seven hydrographic basins embraced in its scope, viz, the Santee, Savannah, Altamaha, Chattahoochee, Alabama, Tennessee, and Cumberland.

Book excerpt: This volume, told through excerpts from the diary of Mary Ames, relates the experiences of two Northern white women, Mary Ames and Emily Bliss, who were employed by the Freedman's Bureau to open a school for the benefit of former slaves. It tells of their journey to Edisto Island, South Carolina, where liberated slaves had been settled after Reconstruction, and of the ruinous living conditions suffered by freedmen and teachers alike. The women managed to establish a school with well over one hundred students, both children and adults. The diary tells of Miss Ames's dealings with former slaves, documents their social and religious life, and reports on the daily difficulties of life in the Reconstruction South. The school was closed by the Freedman's Bureau after a little more than a year.
