Book excerpt: On a windy afternoon in early spring Rory MacLean fell to earth in Anissari, a village surrounded by white mountains in an ancient corner of Crete. MacLean's mother had died only a few months earlier and he had been engulfed by grief. But an old desire had also taken hold to build and fly an aeroplane. And so he set off to the land where Daedalus and Icarus had made their maiden flight and settled in to days of eating lamb and drinking wine with his Cretan neighbours and, with their help, attempting to build a Woodhopper from scratch and make it fly.

Book excerpt: I wanted to write a poetry book. After writing some small volumes that weren't successful. I had deliberated about writing a more well constructed book. Typically longer. At first it was just getting thoughts down on paper, and there are some dark thoughts in here. After some deliberation, I found a connection with things around me. I listened to the stories of the Greek Gods, and Icarus in the sky. Made of wax and flew too close to the sun, with his feathers. The same Greek God who would want to evade capture. I then did some research on this and realised that there is a strong relationship between Greek Mythology and poetry. I then did some more research and I found these things fascinating. The bottom line is, is that no other human being wants another human to suffer. When a human suffers this is when other humans feel pain. I had researched into the greek gods, and mythology around this. I had realised that through this. There was a strong connection between humans and mythology and some kind of spiritual connection. Something I had felt also. I had realised that it doesn't matter how dark or deeper you fall. If you leap into things without thinking. We all become like Icarus of the skies. Because the most courageous Greek gods are the ones who knew that journeys have risk. That we must explore our own minds before taking any trips. That whenever you open up your front door. The dangers are all over you. It's only then I realised that we can talk all day about the sky and the heavens. Yet what I want to focus on is everything around me. Almost trembling and sometimes I am running around not knowing what is best for me. This is why sometimes I feel a connection with Icarus. Yet when I got older I realised that whenever I took a journey outside. This journey had to be planned and we had to know where the dangers of the world were. That the beauty of nature would swallow us. That everything we knew would captivate us. Even though I yearned for the days to fly. I would realise that whenever I tried to do this. They would become burnt and broken. I then realised that my wings were made of feathers and wax. That I flew too close to the sun and had no way of going back. Yet my connection with everything was not really going to help me. I had lost control of my impulses and these things needed to be stopped. Having said that, to feel the impulse as a young man, and having this feeling that you can fly across oceans. Is kind of deceptive because when you realise you don't have wings. You are a danger to yourself. I then realised that if I was going to write any type of poetry. I had to be myself and remember that I am not invincible. Yet every time I strive to help other people I take a risk. I put myself first and I have burnt myself to help other people. Even though the sun burns me, and scolds my skin, sometimes I just feel like I have taken things too far. Then when I talk to people they tell me that I am not responsible for other people's actions. I know there are some dark lyrics in here and none are meant to be taken literally. Yet I wanted to understand what it was like to fly without wings. I wanted to know how the sun would burn me as I got too close to it. Never would I strive to help anyone ever again. Yet I wanted to, and I hope nobody has stopped breathing as this was not what I wanted. As I have written this poetry I have realised that as dark as my memory is. We all want what is best for people. That the urge to feel other people suffer, is just the yearning to approve our own pain to become less. That the only way to truly survive in this world is to know what you are feeling inside. Yet the relationship between other people was something we knew all along. Like the days that weakness was strength and visa versa. I wanted to know everything about these Greek Gods, yet I didn't know where to start.

Book The Icarus Deception

Download or read book The Icarus Deception written by Seth Godin and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Icarus Deception, Seth Godin's most inspiring book, he challenges readers to find the courage to treat their work as a form of art Everyone knows that Icarus's father made him wings and told him not to fly too close to the sun; he ignored the warning and plunged to his doom. The lesson: Play it safe. Listen to the experts. It was the perfect propaganda for the industrial economy. What boss wouldn't want employees to believe that obedience and conformity are the keys to success? But we tend to forget that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low, because seawater would ruin the lift in his wings. Flying too low is even more dangerous than flying too high, because it feels deceptively safe. The safety zone has moved. Conformity no longer leads to comfort. But the good news is that creativity is scarce and more valuable than ever. So is choosing to do something unpredictable and brave: Make art. Being an artist isn't a genetic disposition or a specific talent. It's an attitude we can all adopt. It's a hunger to seize new ground, make connections, and work without a map. If you do those things you're an artist, no matter what it says on your business card. Godin shows us how it's possible and convinces us why it's essential. 'If Seth Godin didn't exist, we'd need to invent him' Fast Company 'Seth Godin is a demigod on the web, a bestselling author, highly sought-after lecturer, successful entrepreneur, respected pundit and high-profile blogger' Forbes Seth Godin is the author of thirteen international bestsellers that have changed the way people think about marketing, the ways ideas spread, leadership and change including Permission Marketing, Purple Cow, All Marketers are Liars, The Dip and Tribes. He is the CEO of Squidoo.com and a very popular lecturer. His blog, www.sethgodin.typepad.com, is the most influential business blog in the world, and consistently one of the 100 most popular blogs on any subject..

Book excerpt: "A Book of Myths" deals in a most entertaining manner with the mythology of Greece and Rome and many other noted lands. Added to the pleasure of the story there is the lure of the legend and the spell of old ways and customs. Not only many of the most celebrated are retold, but also many of the less well-known tales. The aim of the author, it is stated, has been to simplify for those who are not erudite scholars the stories of mythology, to which constant reference is made not only in classic, but in modern poetry, and to direct the attention of readers to poems which are not already known to them. Included are tales of Prometheus, Pygmalion, Orpheus, Perseus, King Midas, Pan, the Lorelei, Baldur and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This complete introduction to the use of modern ray tracing techniques in plasma physics describes the powerful mathematical methods generally applicable to vector wave equations in non-uniform media, and clearly demonstrates the application of these methods to simplify and solve important problems in plasma wave theory. Key analytical concepts are carefully introduced as needed, encouraging the development of a visual intuition for the underlying methodology, with more advanced mathematical concepts succinctly explained in the appendices, and supporting Matlab and Raycon code available online. Covering variational principles, covariant formulations, caustics, tunnelling, mode conversion, weak dissipation, wave emission from coherent sources, incoherent wave fields, and collective wave absorption and emission, all within an accessible framework using standard plasma physics notation, this is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in plasma physics.

Book The Icarus Syndrome

  • Author : Peter Beinart
  • Publisher : Melbourne Univ. Publishing
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 052285804X
  • Pages : 494 pages

Download or read book The Icarus Syndrome written by Peter Beinart and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Icarus Syndrome, Peter Beinart tells a tale as old as the Greeks - a story about the seductions of success. Beinart describes Washington on the eve of three wars - World War I, Vietnam and Iraq - three moments when American leaders decided they could remake the world in their image. Each time, leading intellectuals declared that history was over, and the spread of democracy was inevitable. Each time, a president held the nation in the palm of his hand. And each time, a war conceived in arrogance brought untold tragedy. In dazzling colour, Beinart portrays three extraordinary generations: the progressives who took America into World War I, led by Woodrow Wilson, the lonely preacher's son who became the closest thing to a political messiah the world had ever seen. The Camelot intellectuals who took America into Vietnam, led by Lyndon Johnson, who lay awake night after night shaking with fear that his countrymen considered him weak. And George W. Bush and the post-cold war neoconservatives, the romantic bullies who believed they could bludgeon the Middle East and liberate it at the same time. Like Icarus, each of these generations crafted 'wings' - a theory about America's relationship to the world. They flapped carefully at first, but gradually lost their inhibitions until, giddy with success, they flew into the sun. But every era also brought new leaders and thinkers who found wisdom in pain. They reconciled American optimism - our belief that anything is possible - with the realities of a world that will never fully bend to our will. In their struggles lie the seeds of American renewal today. Based on years of research, The Icarus Syndrome is a provocative and strikingly original account of hubris in the American century - and how we learn from the tragedies that result.
