He also served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology and Professorial Lecturer at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, Visiting Professor of Pathology at the College of Medicine, Obáfémi Awólówo University, Ilé Ife, Nigeria, Èkitì State University College of Medicine and Afe Babalolá University College of Medicine, Adó Ekiti, Nigeria. An accomplished and renowned documentary photographer of the African continent with an extensive history of exhibitions in the United States and Nigeria, he is the author of three outstanding and celebrated books of photographs

Book excerpt: The name Nigeria was coined in Lokoja by Flora Shaw, the future wife of Baron Lugard, a British colonial administrator, while gazing out at the river Niger. So, British colonialism created Nigeria as a country, joining diverse peoples and regions in an artificial political entity along the Niger River. The territory known today as Nigeria is a very large country of multi-ethnic groups of about four hundred. The land mass is large enough to accommodate France, Belgium and Italy. The name Nigeria is derived from the River Niger which traverses the country from the North to the South. Nigeria is located on the coast of Western Africa. It has an area of 356,669 square miles (923,768 square km). At its greatest expanse, it measures about 1,200 kilometres (about 750 mi) from East to West and about 1,050 kilometres (about 650 mi) from North to South. It is bordered to the north by Niger, the east by Chad and Cameroon, the south by the Gulf of Guinea, and to the west by Benin. Niger River and the Benue, are its largest tributary, are the principal rivers in the country. The area that is now Nigeria was home to ethnically based kingdoms and tribal communities before it became a European colony. In spite of European contact that began in the 16th century, these kingdoms and communities maintains their autonomy until the 19th century. Federal Republic of Nigeria is a constitutional Federal Republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja. The principal groups in the Northern part are Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, and Nupe. Other minority tribes also inhabits the Middle belt area, these include the Jukun, the Chamba and the Bata. In the region north of the upper Benue valley various ethnic groups such as Fali, Gabun, Gude, Gudu, Higi, Hona Mbula, Mumuye and Tika also inhabits the area. In the Southwest we have the Yoruba, another principal ethnic group and in the Southeast we have the Igbo people which form the third principal ethnic group. In the South-south we have the group of minorities such as Annang, Efik, Ibibio, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko Uhrobo and Ukwiani. The entire ethnic group in Nigeria is over 500, parts of these are listed in appropriate section of this book.

Professor Laditan is a retired professor of Child Health and Paediatrics. His professional career started as a Paediatric Resident at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. He later transferred his service to the University of Ibadan (UI) as a Research Fellow and Consultant Paediatrician at the Institute of Child Health, where he became Professor and Director of the Institute. In 1984, he was invited from the Institute of Child Health to be the Foundation Provost of a new Medical School, Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences (OACHS) and the Pioneer Chief Medical Director of its teaching hospital in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. In 1988, he left for Saudi Arabia and practised as a Consultant Paediatrician until he left in 2002 and relocated to the USA.

Before the workday was changed to six to five, Saturday used to be a half-day workday. He always wore long shirts and wrappers to church on Sundays at the First Baptist Church in Lagos, by Broad Street and Joseph Street, and, later, on Saturdays too to functions. He wore just wrappers and was always bare-chested at home. Sometimes, he wore just a singlet on top! Apart from his way of dressing, he was always in a hurry to get to work and would not listen to anything in the mornings before work, making us children (sons) have to catch him after work or before he lay in bed for the night. He had many sides and was very soft-spoken and generous, almost to a fault. He loved women, or should I say women really loved him, and I think I navigated through them to the best of my ability. In many ways, he was special, and I guess it started in his youth, even before becoming a man. Or why should his immediate family call him a brand of the white man Oyibotie and not Oritsemi, his real native name? He loved his children and accountancy, his life profession, and he played superior soccer. He also attended the best school in the world, the Government College Ibadan (GCI). I suppose it was there where he first met white students as classmates and dormitory mates. Daddy Frank did a lot in his short life and truly represented his dad, Sir William A. Moore, and his granddad Akinbo, which the Itsekiris transformed to Akenbo for the singular crime of leaving his homestead to the Itsekiri kingdom and also marrying the daughter of the king! Book excerpt: This paper generally lends support to the arguments advanced by Awonusi (1989, 1990, 2004) and others in favour of an endornormative as opposed to an exonormative standard for English pronunciation in Nigeria. They include the fact that the existing, exonormative standard, British Received Pronunciation (RP), has undergone and is still undergoing changes in its homeland, and is not homogeneous. The heightened social mobility of today’s world perhaps works against the demarcation and homogenization of language varieties, and this is all the more true of the varieties or lects that have been proposed for Nigerian English when these are related, more or less explicitly, to educational attainment. Major attention is given in the paper to a schema of basilect, mesolect, and acrolect presented by Ugorji (2010), with a focus on his account of vowels and his presentation of a mechanism derived from optimality theory for evaluating vowels in contention. The basilect and the mesolect are found to be so close to each other that they might be combined. There would then be just two varieties. In contrast, the acrolect is close to British RP, albeit with many variants due to the conflict of two standardising forces, i.e. British RP and the basilect-mesolect. The vowel system of an officially adopted endonormative standard – ‘Nigerian RP’ – would mainly be the same as that of British RP, but the optimality mechanism could be employed to give preference to some of the Nigerian variants for inclusion in it.

The memoir closes with a tender account of the author’s friendship with the writer Diana Trilling, whose failing sight inspires a plan to read aloud Proust’s masterwork, an undertaking that requires six years to complete. Faced with Diana’s approaching death and the mysteries of her own life, the author wonders whether reading, after all, may not be experience at its most ardent, its most transforming.
