Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Horne famously called Australia &‘ the lucky country' . So how did we become the locked-up country and how might the future look different? Australia has changed enormously since Horne' s 1960s, but its response to the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the enduring truth of his thesis that our &‘ luck' was undeserved and wouldn' t last. By closing its borders and imposing a nationally coordinated lockdown, Australia unexpectedly eliminated COVID-19 in 2020, achieving one of the world' s lowest excess mortality rates. But as governments proceeded to bungle key planks of the pandemic response, by mid-2021, Australia was &‘ locked up' &– closed off to the world and fragmented along state and territory borders, with its major cities enduring repeated and extended lockdowns. It soon became clear that Australia' s regulatory state had let us down. But these failures were not inevitable, and we can manage future crises more successfully. In The Locked-up Country, political experts Tom Chodor and Shahar Hameiri identify the source of Australia' s recent challenges and suggest a better way forward.

Book A Pilgrimage to Eternity

Download or read book A Pilgrimage to Eternity written by Timothy Egan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "the world's greatest tour guide," a deeply-researched, captivating journey through the rich history of Christianity and the winding paths of the French and Italian countryside that will feed mind, body, and soul (New York Times). "What a wondrous work! This beautifully written and totally clear-eyed account of his pilgrimage will have you wondering whether we should all embark on such a journey, either of the body, the soul or, as in Egan's case, both." --Cokie Roberts "Egan draws us in, making us feel frozen in the snow-covered Alps, joyful in valleys of trees with low-hanging fruit, skeptical of the relics of embalmed saints and hopeful for the healing of his encrusted toes, so worn and weathered from their walk."--The Washington Post Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity to explore the religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and travels overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy, accompanied by a quirky cast of fellow pilgrims and by some of the towering figures of the faith--Joan of Arc, Henry VIII, Martin Luther. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. A thrilling journey, a family story, and a revealing history, A Pilgrimage to Eternity looks for our future in its search for God.

Book How Terribly Strange Indeed

Download or read book How Terribly Strange Indeed written by Roy Wepner and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOW TERRIBLY STRANGE INDEED: Seventy Is More Than Just a Number takes a deep dive into a single line in a 1968 song by Simon & Garfunkel. They describe two old men sitting together on a park bench, and sing sympathetically, “How terribly strange to be 70.” How exactly could two guys who were not yet 30 know this? And, more importantly, were they right? Roy Wepner, a baby boomer now in his mid-70s, tries to answer these questions here. Wepner delves into various aspects of life in one’s eighth decade to seek out some answers. Among the strange phenomena he explores are having middle-aged children; senior moments that last for hours; pants that are suddenly too long; the loss of a single step—or more; and being a “high risk” senior during a pandemic. Wepner also examines some strangely wonderful things about being in one’s 70s, such as the realization that nostalgia is even better than it used to be; the epiphany that boredom is preventable and curable; the growth in perspective that compensates for some loss of memory; the confirmation that old dogs really can learn new tricks; and—of course—grandchildren. This first-person narrative of life in one’s 70s will provide insight to not only those who have crossed the 70 year threshold, but also those who plan to do so, as well as millennials and members of Generation X who have not yet given up on figuring out their parents.

Book All Joy and No Fun

Download or read book All Joy and No Fun written by Jennifer Senior and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of books have examined the effects of parents on their children. In All Joy and No Fun, award-winning journalist Jennifer Senior now asks: what are the effects of children on their parents? In All Joy and No Fun, award-winning journalist Jennifer Senior tries to tackle this question, isolating and analyzing the many ways in which children reshape their parents' lives, whether it's their marriages, their jobs, their habits, their hobbies, their friendships, or their internal senses of self. She argues that changes in the last half century have radically altered the roles of today's mothers and fathers, making their mandates at once more complex and far less clear. Recruiting from a wide variety of sources—in history, sociology, economics, psychology, philosophy, and anthropology—she dissects both the timeless strains of parenting and the ones that are brand new, and then brings her research to life in the homes of ordinary parents around the country. The result is an unforgettable series of family portraits, starting with parents of young children and progressing to parents of teens. Through lively and accessible storytelling, Senior follows these mothers and fathers as they wrestle with some of parenthood's deepest vexations—and luxuriate in some of its finest rewards. Meticulously researched yet imbued with emotional intelligence, All Joy and No Fun makes us reconsider some of our culture's most basic beliefs about parenthood, all while illuminating the profound ways children deepen and add purpose to our lives. By focusing on parenthood, rather than parenting, the book is original and essential reading for mothers and fathers of today—and tomorrow.
