Challenging conventional academic ‘authority’, each contributor writes, from memory during the Covid-19 lockdown, about a place they have previously visited, ‘accompanied’ by an historical traveller who published an account of the same place. As immobility is forced upon us, at least for the immediate future, we have the chance to reflect. Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine presents opportunities to approach a text as a scholar differently. We break with the traditional academic ‘rules’ by inserting ourselves into the narrative and foregrounding the personal, subjective elements of literary scholarship. Each contributor critiques an historical description of a place about which, simultaneously, they write a personal account. The travel writer, Philip Marsden, posits a fundamental difference between traditional ‘academic’ writing and travel writing in that travel narratives do not, or ought not anyway, begin by assuming a scholarly authoritative understanding of the places they describe. Instead, they attempt to say what they found and how they felt about it. The very good point we think Marsden makes, and the one this book tries to demonstrate, is that, as a matter of form, the first-person narrative has the ability to expose the research process: to allow the reader to see when and how a scholarly transformation takes place; to give the scholar the opportunity to openly foreground their own subjectivity and say ‘this is the personal journey that led me to my conclusions’; to problematize the unchallenged authority of the scholar. Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine challenges the idea of scholarly authority by embracing the subjective nature of research and the first-person element. We address a problematic distance between travel writing practice and travel writing scholarship, in which the latter talks about the former without ever really talking to it. Defining travel writing as a genre has often proved more difficult than it might seem, but Peter Hulme has suggested that it is ethically necessary for the writer to have visited the place described. Hulme asserts that ‘travel writing is certainly literature, but it is never fiction’. If this seems obvious, Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine asks the reader to consider the idea that if visiting the place described is necessary for the writer to claim they have produced a travel account, might it also be necessary, or at least advantageous and valuable, for the writer of a scholarly critique of that account to have done the same.

Finding an idea that touched my soul, doing some research, and asking questions of those who would know more in a particular area. My first ones approached the concept of change. As I became more inspired due to being home in the first months of the pandemic, I started writing weekly. I wrote and then turned it to a Facebook live show on a 24-hr. place called the Quarantine Network. The live chat with the audience resulted in more topics to discover. Because of my nomadic and gregarious life experiences, I would find friends and ask a few poignant questions. “The Quarantine Network was created by humans for humans. The cases document implications of the failure of various governments to establish robust policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in a sample of advanced and low-income countries. Because the global institutions charged with managing the COVID-19 crisis did not work in harmony, the results have been devastating. The four Indigenous communities selected were the Navajo of the southwest United States, Siddi people in India, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia and the Maasai in East Africa. Although these are all diverse communities, spread across different continents, their base economic oppression and survival from colonial violence is a common denominator in hypothesizing the public health management outcomes. To maintain good health and prevent diseases, the adequacy of nutrients is essential; and adherence to healthy diets recommended needs to be monitored. Uncertain physical, social, cultural, and economic situations limit access to nutritious intake and impact health both in the developing (e.g., wasting, stunting, underweight, and mineral/vitamin-related malnutrition) and developed (e.g., obesity) worlds. However, a healthy diet is not only determined by food safety and quality, but also by food education, nutritional practice during the life stages, and food availability and accessibility to the population. This is true in developing countries, but also in developed ones, where vulnerable groups (including people living in conditions of poverty, unemployment, lack of schooling, people with forms of addiction and ethnical minorities) struggle to adhere to healthy diets and choose cheaper, and often unhealthy options. As a consequence, excessive consumption of limited nutrients and inappropriate supplementation becomes as unhealthy as not consuming enough. In the past three years, the pandemic of COVID-19 has put significant troubles on human society, exacerbating hard life conditions in vulnerable groups and worsening their adherence to healthy lifestyles and food choices. Therefore, the nutrition and diet-related health issues in vulnerable people must be highlighted and followed up.
