Book The Vatican Museums

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carlo Pietrangeli
  • Publisher : Edizioni Quasar Di Severino Tognon
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book The Vatican Museums written by Carlo Pietrangeli and published by Edizioni Quasar Di Severino Tognon. This book was released on 1993 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great museum is not only a collection of works of art or artefacts of various interest and various importance: it is also a living organism which has its own history to tell. And if the museum is of ancient origin, this can be of great fascination in itself. It is enough to think of a collections formation; of its progressive development which, over the centuries, takes account of, and is shaped by, the cultural interests of the time. Or of the acquisition, sometimes fortuitous, of the various works. Or of the changing tastes reflected in their display, and the various methods used in their restoration; or of the political developments or doctrinal implications in which the museum may find itself involved. The Vatican Museums, whose origins go back to the early 16th century, exemplify all these concerns in a particularly comprehensive and fascinating way. Their initial formation, almost in the character of a private collection; their threatened dispersal in the Counter-Reformation; their recovery under the impetus of the intellectual revival in the 18th century; their development, also in defence of the artistic patrimony of the State threatened by exports, at the end of the same century; their subsequent enlargement up to more recent times, thanks to the distinguished patronage of the various Popes; and lastly their incorporation, at times exemplary, in the context of the Vatican Palaces, first with Simonettis Museo Pio-Clementino, then with Sterns Braccio Nuovo and more recently with Beltramis Pinacoteca and Passarellis Museo Paolino: all this constitutes not only a field of study, comparison, and reflection, but also at times an example which others have followed. The present book, ideally, would have required a far more extensive archival documentation than the author has been able to consult. It is to be hoped that the systematic exploration of the huge, but very scattered, archival sources available may make it possible in future to update, or to amplify, those parts of the book that were unable to benefit from this irreplaceable support. It may be claimed, nonetheless, that it has proved possible to reconstruct the history of the Vatican Museums in sufficient detail, and that this book may prove useful at a time when the history of collecting is arousing increasing interest. Book Law and Religious Cultural Heritage in Europe

Download or read book Law and Religious Cultural Heritage in Europe written by Theodosios Tsivolas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail both historical and current legal concepts of ‘religious cultural heritage’ within the context of the European continent. The latter group is primarily based on the variety of sacred cultural elements emanating from the different religious traditions of the peoples of Europe, which are deemed worthy of protection and preservation due to their outstanding value, in terms of their social, cultural and religious significance. In view of this, the study provides evidence of the European States’ active involvement with their sacred/cultural treasures, on the basis of the political and legal foundations of neutrality and pluralism. Furthermore, the book analyzes all relevant international legislative instruments (i.e. the plethora of EU, EC and UNESCO norms), as well as all major European legislative patterns, in light of their significance for the aforementioned aspects of pluralism and neutrality. The interdisciplinary references listed at the end of each chapter provide an additional incentive for further reading on the subject matter. The most important finding to emerge from the study is that there is a shared legal ethos in Europe that imposes a duty of appropriate care concerning the vast variety of sacred cultural goods and the religious cultural heritage in general, as an invaluable repository of European cultural capital. It also considers the sui generis nature of this capital: like any other type of asset, it may deteriorate or fade over time, necessitating investment in its preservation or refurbishment; nevertheless, like no other, this particular capital maintains a distinct cultural value, as it contains an additional characteristic of ‘sacredness’ expressed in the form of its ‘religious character,’ the latter being analyzed as a triptych of religious memory, religious aesthetics and religious beliefs.

Book Kurienuniversit t und stadtr mische Universit t von ca 1300 bis 1471

Download or read book Kurienuniversit t und stadtr mische Universit t von ca 1300 bis 1471 written by Brigide Schwarz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amongst the oldest universities that of the Roman curia is the Great Unkown; little is known of the university of Rome (and of Avignon till 1378). To compensate the loss of sources materials mainly from the Vatican were intensively analysed and a prosopography of the dons and students (694 biograms in annex) drawn up. Some results: all three were legal universities of the southern type. The curial university was itinerant, it was continued at the general councils. Only when the curia resided there untroubled, the local schools of Rome (and Avignon) became great, international universities and different forms of association with the curial university were tried on. Rome was sought after by students from all over Europe for study of legal theory whereas praxis was learned at the papal court. Another attraction of Rome were the possibilities of attaining higher academic grades without much ceremony (first in theology, later also in law).
