Download or read book Antipsychotic Drugs and Their Side Effects written by Thomas R.E. Barnes and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with other volumes in the Neuroscience Perspectives Series, this volume covers the background, pharmacology, molecular biology, and biochemistry of antipsychotic drugs, together with an overview assessment of the therapeutic considerations. Over the past 40 years, the effectiveness of conventional neuroleptic agents for psychotic illness has been offset by a wide range of adverse side-effects, including motor side-effects like parkinsonism. Studies show that lowering doses may still produce the antipsychotic effect while lessening the risk of side-effects. As all available antispychotic drugs are able to block dopamine, specifically D2 receptors, doses below the threshold level for producing acute motor disorder can still be therapeutically effective. With the identification and characterization of multiple dopamine receptors, the possibility of more selective drugs with better side-effect potential has arisen. Other novel antipsychotic agents include D1 receptor blockers, partial dopamine agonists and non-dopamine drugs such as 5-HT receptor blockers, sigma receptor antagonists and NMDA receptor agonists. This volume reviews both the basic science of the conventional and atypical neuroleptics and their present and potential therapeutic use.

Download or read book Heterocyclic Chemistry written by Radha R. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, our world increasingly is conceived of as being molecular. An ever widening range of phenomena are described logically in terms of molecular properties and molecular interactions. The majority of known molecules are heterocyclic and heterocycles dominate the fields of biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, dyestuffs, photographic science and are of increasing importance in many others, including polymers, adhesives, and molecular engineering. Thus, the importance of heterocyclic chemistry continues to increase and this three volume work by Drs. R. R. Gupta, Mahendra Kumar and Vandana Gupta is a welcome addition to the available guides on the subject. Its scope places it in a useful niche between the single-volume texts and monographs of heterocyclic chemistry and the multivolume treatises. The authors have retained the well tried classical approach but have succeeded in placing their own individual spin on their arrangement. They have put together a well selected range from among the most important of the vast array offacts available. This factual material is ordered in a clear and logical fashion over the three volumes. The present work should be of great value to students-and practitioners of heterocyclic chemistry at all levels from the advanced undergraduate upwards. It will be of particular assistance in presenting a clear and modem view of the subject to those who use heterocycles in a variety of other fields and we wish it well.

Download or read book Photochromism Molecules and Systems written by Heinz Dürr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 1221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photochromism is simply defined as the light induced reversible change of colour. The field has developed rapidly during the past decade as a result of attempts to improve the established materials and to discover new devices for applications. As photochromism bridges molecular, supramolecular and solid state chemistry, as well as organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, such a treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and a broad presentation. The first edition (1990) provided an enormous amount of new concepts and data, such as the presentation of main families based on the pericyclic reaction mechanism, the review of new families, some bimolecular photocycloadditions and some promising systems. This new edition provides an efficient entry into this flourishing field, with the core content retained from the original work to provide a basic introduction into the different subjects.*Second edition of a work first published in 1990, now revised due to constant development of research. *Including updated lists of references (1989-2001), offering immediate access to recent developments.*Providing great basic interest and high application potential bringing scientists together from chemistry, physics and engineering.
