Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning, powerful debut novel set against the backdrop of the Cambodian War, perfect for fans of Chris Cleave and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie For seven-year-old Raami, the shattering end of childhood begins with the footsteps of her father returning home in the early dawn hours bringing details of the civil war that has overwhelmed the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. Soon the family's world of carefully guarded royal privilege is swept up in the chaos of revolution and forced exodus. Over the next four years, as she endures the deaths of family members, starvation, and brutal forced labour, Raami clings to the only remaining vestige of childhood - the mythical legends and poems told to her by her father. In a climate of systematic violence where memory is sickness and justification for execution, Raami fights for her improbable survival. Displaying the author's extraordinary gift for language, In the Shadow of the Banyanis testament to the transcendent power of narrative and a brilliantly wrought tale of human resilience. 'In the Shadow of the Banyanis one of the most extraordinary and beautiful acts of storytelling I have ever encountered' Chris Cleave, author of The Other Hand 'Ratner is a fearless writer, and the novel explores important themes such as power, the relationship between love and guilt, and class. Most remarkably, it depicts the lives of characters forced to live in extreme circumstances, and investigates how that changes them. To read In the Shadow of the Banyan is to be left with a profound sense of being witness to a tragedy of history' Guardian 'This is an extraordinary debut … as beautiful as it is heartbreaking' Mail on Sunday

Life is a mixed bag for Piper Calloway. On the one hand, she’s a twenty-nine-year-old VP at her dad’s multibillion-dollar real estate development firm, and living the high single life with her two best friends in a swanky downtown penthouse. The guy she hasn’t seen or heard from since they were summer camp counselors together. The guy from the wrong side of the tracks. The guy who apparently doesn’t even remember her name. Book excerpt: Ever since she could walk, Homicide Detective Deena Pilgrim followed in her father’s footsteps. A man with a badge, Waldo Pilgrim surrounded himself with what Deena believed to be the cream of the crop when it came to serving and protecting. These days, Deena won’t discuss her father or the life she left behind in Atlanta years ago, a life before she partnered with Christian Walker to investigate homicide cases in a city where perps and victims boast incredible, dangerous powers. Now, nearly a decade of bringing Powers to justice has broken down Deena’s resolve, along with the walls she erected long ago to protect herself from prying eyes. Walls that kept her from a past best left alone, and from those determined to get close and bring horrible, heartbreaking memories to the surface once more. But when a cold case reopens a series of unsolved murders that point back to Deena’s family tree, she is unavoidably reacquainted with a former boyfriend with ties to both sets of killings, along with her sordid past. Forced to question the choices, decisions, and steps she’s taken in life, love, and career---including her long-standing partnership with Walker, a former Power whose secret history intersects with Deena’s own---Detective Deena Pilgrim must bring a killer to justice and, in doing so, hopefully come to terms with the kind of cop she wants to be . . . assuming that she wants to continue being a cop at all. Written by Powers cocreator Brian Michael Bendis and novelist Neil Kleid, The Secret History of Deena Pilgrim is the first-ever prose story set in the world of the award-winning, critically acclaimed comic book series by Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming. Powers tells the stories of human police officers attempting to solve crimes in a world inhabited by superheroes and supervillains. In January 2015, the Playstation Network debuted it as its first-ever hour-long scripted programming, featuring characters and plots from the comic book series.

Download or read book Good Rocky s Revival written by John Bontley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Leonard, Jr. is a horse's ass. What's more, he's a tall and awkward forty-three-year-old failure stuck with a hopeless job in a hopeless city-oh, his issues are numerous. He failed early to attain the only goal he made for himself, that of being a novelist. His obstreperous, blow-hard father, whom Tom blames for darn near everything, suffers a stroke and now, after years of alienation, needs Tom's full-time attention. Sure, Tom's engaged to an angular, angry woman named Gennifer but he doesn't love her, and it would be hard to believe she loves him. His first marriage crumbled as a result of his wife, Gloria's, incessant infidelity, and he silently suffers for twenty years the rejection of his early friends and the beautiful Katie Harbor. Now his only son Elliot begins a successful writing career-working on, and completing, a debut autobiographical novel that not only details his father's myriad of misfortunes (like the day he was robbed at knifepoint while using a public toilet), but has parts lifted rather overtly from a very personal and unfinished memoir Tom Leonard, Jr. had penned two decades before. Elliot's creative process forces Tom Leonard to re-examine his past, his decisions, and the friends who left him behind (ah, there's the beautiful Katie Harbor again). Then, when Elliot's novel is finally published, damned if Elliot's vitriol didn't punch Tom right in the stomach. Good Rocky's Revival is Tom's defensive answer to Elliot's novel. It is told through Tom Leonard's humorously droll, heavily biased, and quite unreliable narrative. It bounces from the past to the present and back again: from his aching, graceless high school and college days to the testing conflicts with Gennifer Hopper and an encumbering, dying father; from his failed first marriage to the critical night he told Katie Harbor he loved her.

Curious, I went down to C desk and noticed an open door. These gentlemen lived in a cramped room for over 6 months out of the years and they get along. True they have to or they would be fired but what if an event snowballed into peace in the Middle East. The bible is clear, it says pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those of us who claim that Abraham is the father of many nations understand that we are killing our own kind. Why, because we disagree on who should have the power.

Book excerpt: Bearing aversion & dubiety for society, Mike Mose braved the culture of Detroit, Michigan in the 1990s. Even though the city became ravaged with poverty & violence, the calamity taking place within his home created his ultimate austerity. With a womanizing father who was imprisoned due to illicit business dealings, his mother was forced to raise f ive boys alone. She overcame extreme f inancial hardships & was able to move her family to the suburbs of Southfield, Michigan. The move guaranteed her children an opportunity to attain the spectrum of grandeur that she desired for them. In Mike Moses new environment, he was introduced to a class of African Americans hed never encountered before. While in the suburbs, he realized that he didnt quite agree with the belief systems that the kids there had developed about race & lower class blacks. Thus, he became entangled in an identity crisis; one where he struggled with his city roots and his new middle class beginning. Mikes closest friends in Detroit were involved in underworld criminal activity, running with gangs such as CS8 & the Motown Legends. However, he strived to fit in with a new crew in Southfield called PBC. PBC was a selective group of young black men in the area, who wanted Mike to forget about his friends in Detroit. As a young, light skinned African-American man, Mike was a constant victim of intra-racism, victimized by dark skinned blacks. He also witnessed dark skinned blacks fall victim to intra-racism as well. The intra-racism that he encountered was compelling, and brings to light this ugly secret that has been hidden in the African- American community. Throughout the book, Mike Mose remains stuck in the middle of two worlds, representing the unique position that many African-Americans, who move to the suburbs from inner cities, are placed in.
