Download or read book I Siciliani written by Lou Quattro and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for I SICILIANI came during Lou's time in Tuscany where, working in land development, he gained the opportunity to know many Sicilians, and came to understand their background, passions and what motivates them. This work of fiction looks at Sicilian history, the founding of La Cosa Nostra, and the values that shape it. It explores how the tentacles of the Sicilian way reach north into Tuscan life. The book teems with the themes of intrigue, conspiracy, murder, religion, politics and sex. The arrest of a sitting mayor in Tuscany and the subsequent illegal investigation of the local maresciallo, as well as the involvement of a Cosa Nostra family, bring into play the battle Italy has had with corruption and the lengths its people will go to for power....
Download or read book The Italian Antimafia New Media and the Culture of Legality written by Robin Pickering-Iazzi and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have witnessed increasing opposition to mafia influence and activities in Italy. Community organizations such as Libera, founded in 1995, and Addiopizzo, originating in 2004, exemplify how Italian society has tried to come together to promote antimafia activities. The societal opposition to mafia influence continues to grow and the Internet has become a frontline in the battle between the two groups. The Italian Antimafia, New Media, and the Culture of Legality is the first book to examine the online battles between the mafia and its growing cohort of opponents. While the mafia's supporters have used Internet technologies to expand its power, profits, and violence, antimafia citizens employ the same technologies to recreate Italian civil society. The contributors to this volume are experts in diverse fields and offer interdisciplinary studies of antimafia activism and legality in online journalism, Twitter, YouTube, digital storytelling, blogs, music, and photography. These examinations enable readers to understand the grassroots Italian cultural revolution, which makes individuals responsible for promoting justice, freedom, and dignity.

Download or read book Constructing Languages written by Francesc Feliu and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. Mythical stories encourage the achievement of prescriptive rules and lead speakers to link emotions to their language. Therefore, the topics of reflection that we want to discuss in this volume are: Norms, Myths and Emotions related to language construction.

Download or read book Commerce and Conquest in the Mediterranean 1100 1500 written by David Abulafia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 12th century onwards merchants from the north Italian and southern French towns were able to take advantage of Christian conquests in southern Italy, Sicily and the Levant to penetrate and dominate the markets of these regions and of North Africa. The articles collected in this volume examine the economic, social and religious impact of this combination of trade and conquest . They include studies of the survival of Jews and Muslims in Sicily, of the debate about the 'under-development' of medieval southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, of relations between the rulers of those regions and the merchants, and of mercantile penetration into the kingdom of Jerusalem, Cyprus and Tunis in the wake of Crusaders and Sicilian kings.
