Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Edgar Award for Best First Novel In this “beautifully written, thoughtful page-turner” (Chloe Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists) from “the next big voice in crime fiction” (Susan Scarf Merrell, author of Shirley), two young women become unlikely friends during one fateful summer in Atlantic City as mysterious disappearances hit dangerously close to home. Summer has come to Atlantic City but the boardwalk is empty of tourists, the casino lights have dimmed, and two Jane Does are laid out in the marshland behind the Sunset Motel, just west of town. Only one person even knows they’re there. Meanwhile, Clara, a young boardwalk psychic, struggles to attract clients for the tarot readings that pay her rent. When she begins to experience very real and disturbing visions, she suspects they could be related to the recent cases of women gone missing in town. When Clara meets Lily, an ex-Soho art gallery girl who is working at a desolate casino spa and reeling from a personal tragedy, she thinks Lily may be able to help her. But Lily has her own demons to face. If they can put the pieces together in time, they may save another lost girl—so long as their efforts don’t attract perilous attention first. “You won’t be able to stop turning the pages of this heartbreaking” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) and compelling psychological thriller that explores the intersection of womanhood, power, and violence.

Book excerpt: Identical twins Drs. Phyllis and Philetha Tucker have seen it all during their careersmurder, rape, bomb threats, and assaults with deadly weapons. Surprisingly, the sisters are not police officers, FBI agents, or private detectives. They are school teachers who together have spent over 60 years educatingand at times savingthe youth of America. Written in one voice of two women who share the same educational views, and in some instances, the same or similar experiences, Can You See Us provides a compelling glimpse into an educational system that unfortunately no longer sees children as its first priority but seems to focus on politics and money. The sisters share heart-wrenching stories that detail the bullying, abandonment, and personal tragedies children endure on a daily basis in the midst of a school system short on resources, funds, and time. They offer a moving perspective that only a teacher can provide while joyfully watching some children succeed and helplessly witnessing others fail. The stories in Can You See Us will hopefully encourage parents, educators, and administrators to begin taking the crucial steps to transform an educational system in desperate need of reform. Absolutely enlightening. Professor Bonnie Ronson

  • Publisher : Univ. of Manitoba Press
  • Release : 2021-03-19
  • ISBN : 0887559247
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Did You See Us written by Survivors of the Assiniboia Indian Residential School and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Assiniboia school is unique within Canada’s Indian Residential School system. It was the first residential high school in Manitoba and one of the only residential schools in Canada to be located in a large urban setting. Operating between 1958 and 1973 in a period when the residential school system was in decline, it produced several future leaders, artists, educators, knowledge keepers, and other notable figures. It was in many ways an experiment within the broader destructive framework of Canadian residential schools. Stitching together memories of arrival at, day-to-day life within, and departure from the school with a socio-historical reconstruction of the school and its position in both Winnipeg and the larger residential school system, Did You See Us? offers a glimpse of Assiniboia that is not available in the archival records. It connects readers with a specific residential school and illustrates that residential schools were often complex spaces where forced assimilation and Indigenous resilience co-existed. These recollections of Assiniboia at times diverge, but together exhibit Survivor resilience and the strength of the relationships that bond them to this day. The volume captures the troubled history of residential schools. At the same time, it invites the reader to join in a reunion of sorts, entered into through memories and images of students, staff, and neighbours. It is a gathering of diverse knowledges juxtaposed to communicate the complexity of the residential school experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the ironies of the post-Cold War world, in which the power of the United States is without rival, is that the costs of isolationism and ignorance are greater than ever. The temptation to imagine that the rest of the world matters less than before is enticing, as America basks in the triumphant glow of a world in which capitalism and democracy, under the aegis of American leadership, are thought to have vanquished all rivals. Although it is unlikely that Americans will come to pay much attention to the rest of the world anytime soon—except when their citizens are threatened or killed abroad, or when they are persuaded that the threat of foreigners doing harm at home seems real—their failure to do so cripples the ability of the United States to understand a world in which American interests, security, and prosperity are embedded to an unprecedented degree. As Others See Us investigates the causes and consequences of the world’s perceptions of America. It proceeds from the premise that the images, ideas, and information that foreign populations have of the United States and Americans come from a number of sources, most of which are mediated. Some of these sources are American, Hollywood especially. Others are located outside the country, in the media, educational, religious, and political systems through which foreign populations learn about America. Any attempt to understand the "what" and "why" of foreign perceptions of America needs to look closely at these external determinants of how the image and interpretation of the United States is constructed in different societies.

Book To See Ourselves as Others See Us

Download or read book To See Ourselves as Others See Us written by Ole Rudolf Holsti and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Holsti, the authority on American foreign policy attitudes, investigates others' views of us. It's not pretty. It matters. Read this." ---Bruce Russett, Dean Acheson Professor of International Relations, Yale University, and editor of the Journal of Conflict Resolution "Clearly and engagingly written, Holsti's book ranks among the most important---and most objective---of the post-9/11 scholarly studies. It deserves a large readership, both within and beyond academe." ---Ralph Levering, Vail Professor of History, Davidson College In terms of military and economic power, the United States remains one of the strongest nations in the world. Yet the United States seems to have lost the power of persuasion, the ability to make allies and win international support. Why? Immediately after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, leaders and citizens of foreign nations generally expressed sympathy for the United States. Since then, attitudes have changed. Drawing upon public opinion surveys conducted in 30 nations, Ole R. Holsti documents an increasing anti-American sentiment. His analysis suggests that the war in Iraq, human rights violations, and unpopular international policies are largely responsible. Consequently, the United States can rebuild its repute by adopting an unselfish, farsighted approach to global issues. Indeed, the United States must restore goodwill abroad, Holsti asserts, because public opinion indirectly influences the leaders who decide whether or not to side with the Americans. Ole R. Holsti is George V. Allen Professor Emeritus of International Affairs in the Department of Political Science at Duke University and author of Public Opinion and American Foreign Policy.

Download or read book They Didn t See Us Coming written by Lisa Levenstein and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning scholar, a vibrant portrait of a pivotal moment in the history of the feminist movement From the declaration of the "Year of the Woman" to the televising of Anita Hill's testimony, from Bitch magazine to SisterSong's demands for reproductive justice: the 90s saw the birth of some of the most lasting aspects of contemporary feminism. Historian Lisa Levenstein tracks this time of intense and international coalition building, one that centered on the growing influence of lesbians, women of color, and activists from the global South. Their work laid the foundation for the feminist energy seen in today's movements, including the 2017 Women's March and #MeToo campaigns. A revisionist history of the origins of contemporary feminism, They Didn't See Us Coming shows how women on the margins built a movement at the dawn of the Digital Age.
