Book excerpt: I Saw My P.A. Today is an educational book for young children written by Lavette Shirley Elee. The story features an active little girl who falls and injures her knee while running. The girl's mother decides that they need to go to the urgent care clinic. The child is scared and doesn't want to go, but the P.A. who tends to her injuries is kind and soon the little girl feels much happier and safer. This story is written for children in the pre-school to early elementary range. The book has colorful pictures and there is good contrast between the text and the background so it is easy to read. The simple rhyming scheme makes the story easy and fun to follow, which is helpful for children who are learning how to read.I think that the book could be useful for those studying to be medical providers to read as well, because it gives an insight into the way young children think. Young children need to be informed about medical procedures that they are undergoing in simple terms, and they need to be treated with compassion and respect. I was born in a time when medical providers tended to be scary, authoritarian figures who never explained what they were doing before doing it, and who tended to sneak up on the patient with a shot or such.

Book excerpt: By the time they reach eighteen, Joni and Caycee have been best friends their entire lives—growing up at each other’s houses, as close as sisters. But everything changes when Joni’s grandmother, who raised her, dies, and Lewis comes to town. Within a few months, Joni has left to go to college hundreds of miles away without even saying goodbye to Caycee, who is left behind, bewildered, hurt, and aching with loneliness. Not even being married to Lewis and carrying his child can fill the hole left by Joni’s mysterious departure and subsequent silence. When their premature baby dies, Lewis’s lack of love for Caycee and their very different reactions become clear—and finding an infant girl named Madisin left on their doorstep only complicates matters further. In the same marriage and under the same roof, they live vastly different emotional lives. Only years later, when tragedy strikes Caycee and Lewis again and Joni is persuaded to return, is the truth about Joni’s disappearance brought to light. She and Caycee are finally reconciled, but with consequences far greater than anyone could have imagined. This novel, woven together in the voices of its five main characters, reveals the complexity of human nature in its portrayal of fierce love, searing grief, self-hatred, surprising tenderness, and attraction that survives even while it destroys. In the end, one question remains: in a world where intentions don’t always have the expected outcomes, should the truth prevail in every situation, regardless of the cost?

Download or read book Cloud Atlas 20th Anniversary Edition written by David Mitchell and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A STUNNINGLY DESIGNED DELUXE HARDCOVER EDITION • Celebrate the 20th anniversary of this timeless, structure-bending classic—from a postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in twenty-first-century fiction • With an introduction by Gabrielle Zevin (author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow) Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. The novel careens, with dazzling virtuosity, to Belgium, 1931, to the West Coast in the 1970s, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate in the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history. But the story doesn’t end even there. The novel boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky. As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon. With a stunning, unmissable new design, this Knopf Canada exclusive 20th anniversary hardcover edition is the perfect gift for fans.
