Book Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube

Download or read book Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube written by Blair Braverman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and revelatory memoir of a young woman reclaiming her courage in the stark landscapes of the north. By the time Blair Braverman was eighteen, she had left her home in California, moved to arctic Norway to learn to drive sled dogs, and found work as a tour guide on a glacier in Alaska. Determined to carve out a life as a “tough girl”—a young woman who confronts danger without apology—she slowly developed the strength and resilience the landscape demanded of her. By turns funny and sobering, bold and tender, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube brilliantly recounts Braverman’s adventures in Norway and Alaska. Settling into her new surroundings, Braverman was often terrified that she would lose control of her dog team and crash her sled, or be attacked by a polar bear, or get lost on the tundra. Above all, she worried that, unlike the other, gutsier people alongside her, she wasn’t cut out for life on the frontier. But no matter how out of place she felt, one thing was clear: she was hooked on the North. On the brink of adulthood, Braverman was determined to prove that her fears did not define her—and so she resolved to embrace the wilderness and make it her own. Assured, honest, and lyrical, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube paints a powerful portrait of self-reliance in the face of extraordinary circumstance. Braverman endures physical exhaustion, survives being buried alive in an ice cave, and drives her dogs through a whiteout blizzard to escape crooked police. Through it all, she grapples with love and violence—navigating a grievous relationship with a fellow musher, and adapting to the expectations of her Norwegian neighbors—as she negotiates the complex demands of being a young woman in a man’s land. Weaving fast-paced adventure writing and ethnographic journalism with elegantly wrought reflections on identity, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube captures the triumphs and the perils of Braverman’s journey to self-discovery and independence in a landscape that is as beautiful as it is unforgiving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a very humble beginning filled with hardships, the sixth child in a family of fourteen, I was born on a small impoverished farm on the Gaspé Peninsula, in Quebec, Canada, just a tiny dot on the map as I say, and had a very unusual and fulfilled life. Living in ten major Canadian and us cities, always accidentally, I met unforgettable people such as a Roman Catholic Cardinal, Representatives of Governments in Canada, the Governor of Florida, as well as meeting internationally known singers such as Elvis Presley and Julio Iglesias, a WWII naval officer, hockey players, wrestlers and many more prominent people. I lived through illnesses, three earthquakes, car accidents, robberies at gun point and knife point, the Italian and Cuban exoduses and through the 9/11 collapse of the Twin Towers by the terrorists, in ny. In my youth I even realized my dream of skydiving. I dedicate this book to Dr. Maria Pedro for saving my life in 2013, without whom there would not be a book to leave as my legacy to future generations, and to my dear sister, Françoise, who is always there for me.

Download or read book Around the World in Fifty Sites written by Susan Battersby and published by novum pro Verlag. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people create a bucket list of things to do before they die. But how many of these are chosen by other people, in particular by the British public? In 2002, the BBC aired a programme entitled "Fifty places to see before you die" - a list of cities, natural wonders and ancient sites, chosen as the best places to see from around the world. This hour long programme changed my life! I met my husband, Richard, on holiday in Venezuela in 2000, and like everybody else, we would trawl through the travel brochures looking for inspiration for our holidays. After watching this television programme, I made the decision that we would make every effort to visit all the fifty sites listed. It took us twelve years to complete our journey, and this is my story, based on your chosen itinerary.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Sensory Archaeology

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Sensory Archaeology written by Robin Skeates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by two pioneers in the field of sensory archaeology, this Handbook comprises a key point of reference for the ever-expanding field of sensory archaeology: one that surpasses previous books in this field, both in scope and critical intent. This Handbook provides an extensive set of specially commissioned chapters, each of which summarizes and critically reflects on progress made in this dynamic field during the early years of the twenty-first century. The authors identify and discuss the key current concepts and debates of sensory archaeology, providing overviews and commentaries on its methods and its place in interdisciplinary sensual culture studies. Through a set of thematic studies, they explore diverse sensorial practices, contexts and materials, and offer a selection of archaeological case-studies from different parts of the world. In the light of this, the research methods now being brought into the service of sensory archaeology are re-examined. Of interest to scholars, students and others with an interest in archaeology around the world, this book will be invaluable to archaeologists and is also of relevance to scholars working in disciplines contributing to sensory studies: aesthetics, anthropology, architecture, art history, communication studies, history (including history of science), geography, literary and cultural studies, material culture studies, museology, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

Book Dictionary of Newfoundland English

Download or read book Dictionary of Newfoundland English written by W.J. Kirwin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990-11-01 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Newfoundland English, first published in 1982 to regional, national, and international acclaim, is a historical dictionary that gives the pronunciations and definitions for words that the editors have called "Newfoundland English." The varieties of English spoken in Newfoundland date back four centuries, mainly to the early seventeenth-century migratory English fishermen of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset, and to the seventeenth- to the nineteenth-century immigrants chiefly from southeastern Ireland. Culled from a vast reading of books, newspapers, and magazines, this book is the most sustained reading ever undertaken of the written words of this province. The dictionary gives not only the meaning of words, but also presents each word with its variant spellings. Moreover, each definition is succeeded by an all-important quotation of usage which illustrates the typical context in which word is used. This well-researched, impressive work of scholarship illustrates how words and phrases have evolved and are used in everyday speech and writing in a specific geographical area. The Dictionary of Newfoundland English is one of the most important, comprehensive, and thorough works dealing with Newfoundland. Its publication, a great addition to Newfoundlandia, Canadiana, and lexicography, provides more than a regional lexicon. In fact, this entertaining and delightful book presents a panoramic view of the social, cultural, and natural history, as well as the geography and economics, of the quintessential lifestyle of one of Canada's oldest European-settled areas. This second edition contains a supplement offering approximately 1500 new or expanded entries, an increase of more than 30 per cent over the first edition. Besides new words, the supplement includes modified and additional senses of old words and fresh derivations and usages.

Book A Wolf in the Kitchen

Download or read book A Wolf in the Kitchen written by J. T. Bryde and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wolf in the Kitchen is the prequel to Jim’s first book, SLED DOG GUN: AVIEMORE DREAMING. In 1987 Jim and Cherry bought their very first Siberian Husky... Hustler. On showing him to people for the first time, they were asked the inevitable question: “Is that a baby wolf?” A year later in the Summer of 1988 a small advert in a local paper changed their lives forever. They discovered the sport of “dog sledding.” Over the next 15 years, more dogs were bought until they had eleven. What follows is the story of these years and is both highly amusing, and often downright funny. After much perseverance, and some frustration, Jim transforms these dogs into one of the fastest teams in Great Britain. With it came recognition that he never imagined, and he and his team found fame on national radio and TV and played a part in a major movie film. A lovely easy read that is suitable for all ages.

Book Iditarod Adventures

Download or read book Iditarod Adventures written by Lew Freedman and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In IDITAROD ADVENTURES, mushers explain why they have chosen this rugged lifestyle, what has kept them in long-distance mushing, and the experiences they have endured along that unforgiving trail between Anchorage and Nome. Renowned sports writer Lew Freedman profiles 23 mushers—men, women, Natives, seasoned veterans, and some relatively new to the demanding sport, many of whom are so well-known in Alaska that fans refer to them only by their first names. The book also features interviews with administrators who organize the event and make sure it happens every year, volunteers, and others whose connection to the Iditarod is self-evident even if they don’t have an official title.
